Hi everyone! It's a boy so I guess Marah Jade has a skill. Quinlan Paul was born Monday August 13th at 10:38 am. He is 11 lbs 4 oz and 23.5 inches long.

Marah Jade making sure I am ok after the birth.

Birth story below

Sunday evening my stomach got really hard like one continuous braxton hicks. This had happened before so I tried not to get too excited. I finally went to bed at about 1:00 AM Monday morning. When Steve woke up my stomach was still hard. I wasn’t feeling any labor contractions just the stomach hardness. Steve was getting ready for work, it was 3:30 am, and I went down stairs and told him my stomach was weird. Normally sleeping will make it go away. He told me he wouldn’t call in unless I felt I was in actual labor so I went back to bed. I kind of dozed off and on and remember thinking that my water was going to break. I felt it pop and jumped out of bed. I didn’t have anything on the bed and didn’t want to get it dirty. As soon as I stood up I had a gush of water so I hurried downstairs to sit on the toilet and called Steve. He was at Walmart making his before work toy run. It was 4:25 in the morning. I went in the living room and called my mom. Her first response when I told her my water broke was “Are you serious?” LOL. I still wasn’t really feeling any contractions so I debated calling my midwife. I decided finally to call. We hadn’t really discussed perimeters for me calling since my labors are short. I called her at about 4:45 am to say my water broke and she told me to call when the contractions got more serious.

Steve came home and decided to set up the pool. I was finally feeling contractions and so he decided to start timing them and they were about three minutes apart. He called my MW back and she said she would come. This was about 5:00 am. My mom showed up and I tried to eat but I wasn’t really hungry. I had a cheese stick and a piece of toast that I barely choked down. My MW arrived around 6:00 am I don’t remember exactly. I sat on the couch for most of my labor. My MW set a bunch of stuff up so I didn’t feel to bad for calling so early. At about 8:00 I climbed into the pool. It was very warm and relaxing. Marah Jade woke up and decided to climb in the pool. I was ok with that until I started to go into transition.

I asked to get out of the pool and get on my bed. My mom got Marah Jade out of the pool and she played video games for a little bit. I had Steve sit on the bed in the corner so I could kneel in front of him and lay my head on his shoulders. He was such a trooper. My transition contractions pretty much had no break in them and I was getting really whiny and tired. I finally felt like pushing around 9:30 am. I asked if Marah Jade could go in the living room and my mom set up a movie for her. I was really squirming around a lot and fighting my pushing so my MW really had to coach me. I realize now the pushing I did with Marah Jade was not effective at all because that was what I was trying to do with Quinlan.

Finally my MW asked me to lay down on my side and my pushing was a lot more effective after that. His forehead was born and I had to rest before I could push again. My MW said that saved me from being torn severely. His head was born and I could here my MW talking to my mom and she was fidgeting with his head. I remember thinking how wonderful it would be if she would just pull him out. A couple more pushes and he was born at 10:38 am. It turns out that he was born with his hand pressed up against his cheek so not only did I deliver a 15 inch head but I delivered a hand as well! His cord had been loose around his neck and my MW had moved it off his neck as well as pulled his hand a bit to help him be born. If you look at the last picture I posted you can see his hand print on his cheek.

Post partum was really awesome. I hardly bled at all. I was really shaky from the adrenaline and I had to chug a bunch of juice to help out my blood sugar. Marah Jade had seen him right after he was born and was freaked out a tiny bit by the blood but was ok once everybody said that was normal. She climbed up on the bed to check on me and then went and played in the birth pool some more. My MW ran me a sitz bath with some herbs in it and had me float Quinlan by holding his head. He really enjoyed it and kicked and stretched out.
