So I LOVE this forum and have, throughout my pregnancy, been voraciously reading every vax book I can get my hands on. I work with three young women (early twenties) preparing for nursing school so we have some rather colorful conversations at work, especially since two took Microbiology over the summer.
One is starting actual school/clinicals in a few weeks, though, and has been told by her doctor she needs to get an MMR booster as her parents have no record of her vaccinations, other than the knowledge she received all at the time. They did a blood test for titers and are supposed to give her the results today, but she is scheduled for the shot today as well.
Being twenty-one weeks pregnant, I am slightly worried about the possibility of rubella viral shedding. I had the MMR as a child and am not sure whether or not my own titers were checked with the prenatal labs - I'm assuming they were but have no idea what they read or if the OB would even bring it up prior to birth/this early either way. We work in close quarters with each other (Starbucks). Should I be concerned? I know CRS is worst in the first trimester but of course I'd prefer to be prudent when it comes to protecting my baby. If concern is warranted, how long do these viruses actively shed?
Thanks for any input!
Elizabeth
