Plugged Duct w/ nursing toddler - what to do? (x-posted)

I have (or am getting over?) a plugged duct because DS (16mos) went an exceptionally long time on Tuesday without nursing. I know the standard protocol for plugged ducts, one of which is to nurse every 2 hours and then pump if the affected side is not fully emptied. Well, I can't get my toddler to nurse every 2 hrs. I don't think I want to necessarily pump every 2 hrs because that might just increase my supply which means when the plugged duct is healed I will have more milk then DS needs/wants which will put me at continued risk for more plugged ducts.

So I am not entirely sure what to do. Any of you have a plugged duct with a nursing toddler? What did you do?

I completely understand what you're saying. I was very prone to mastitis with my first ds, and I always asked the drs about this very thing--if I increase my nursings while treating the mastitis, won't that compound the over supply problem that led to my mastitis in the first place??????

So instead try massage, moist heat, and cabbage to get the plug loosened up. It should work, and you won't affect your supply at all.
