Book Swap

Thread Starter
I found paperbackswap.com randomly while surfing one day. I am in the midst of a huge declutter before we move. I have tons of books. I was going to just donate them to a library but found this site first. I figured I would post my books and whatever did not swap I would bring to the library before we moved. In a month I have sent off 24 books. Anyway you list your book. If someone wants it they request it. You send your book media mail which you pay for. When it arrives the receiver says it arrived OK and you get a credit. You can request a book from another swapper for every credit. They pay to ship to you. I originally thought it would help me declutter. But I keep on finding new books to swap for. On the other hand I am able to get new books without buying them. Well the shipping costs $1-$2. But still better then buying the books new. The kids love it because I am getting new ones for them too. I am not affiliated with paperbackswap but I am addicted

They have a sister site too...swapacd. I use both frequently. Much better than buying new plus if I don't like the book or cd, I can repost it and someone else usually takes it.

My DP loves that site. Any book he wants that he can't find at a thrift store, he'll get on the waiting list on paperbackswap. It's a neat site.

My biggest grip with paperback swap ia that there are never any books I want or are on my wish list.... I have like 20 credits built up, just waiting for something great to be posted.... I have gotten a few books I am happy with but most of what I read just isn't coming my way. However, I do read mostly non-ficton but if I was a ficton reader, it would be heaven.

Are you a big music fan? The paperbackswap credits can be switched over to swapacd credits to get CD's.

I like paperbackswap.com too. I've had pretty good luck with the "wish list" - books I want seem to eventually turn up. However, I tend to read fiction. It is also sometimes nice to just look at recently posted books and see if anything looks tempting.

I use a similar site called BookMooch. Somehow (to me) it seemed easier to manage than paperback swap. We've saved so much on books using it. And it's fun to send books off to their new homes.

I just started PBS today.... it worked wonderful and the book i posted was immediately taken... Now I just have to list my whole box of books (probably 100 or so)

Does anyone know how the response on PBS is to kids and baby books?

HI,
I just checkout PBS and it sounds like a good idea. One question though what if you get multiple request for your book? Am I supposed to send to the first requester? Do they usually have a few years-old publications or do they have newer publications? After I post books and don't get much response for my books can I cancel the post (if I just want to give them away) or do I absolutely need to commit these books to send away via this site? Can I can post my books to multiple swap site and send it to whoever respond first? After I searched for my wish list books I noticed for some books there are more than 50 people. How does the poster choose which one to send the book? Or do I need to keep browse everyday see if my wishlist came up and apply to the poster..? I'm sorry for the long question but I didn't find these info on tutorials there and I thought I would ask you guys since you are using the site.
Thanks for the link too.

Can I use the same ID from PBS to use this CD swap site?

I LOVE PBS! I've been doing it for a few years, and it is so great. It's really improved in the last year, too. Let me see if I can answer some of these questions.

It's all automated. The system totally does it for you. So you only get sent the information about the first person who requests it. Same with the Wish List. The system keeps track of where everyone is in line, so no one ever gets multiple requests. You do NOT have to keep checking back - PBS will email you when your wish list book becomes available and you have 48 hours to decide if you want it or not.

Both. Of course, newer, more popular publications are going to be harder to get. But they have the Wish List feature - you search for the book, click "add to wish list" and it goes on there. If you go to your account and view your wish list books, mouse over the exclamation point in the grey circle near the book, and it will tell you your place in line for the book (i.e you are 4th out of 50 people waiting for the book).

As far as I know you can take books down as much as you want, with no commitment. The only caveat may be in the very beginning, since they require you post 8 books in order to receive your first 3 credits for trading. If you go below 8, they might take away your "free" credits. But other than that, you can take them down whenever. You can also decline requests if you want/need to. For instance, we were moving and someone requested a book and I declined, and told them the book was in a box somewhere and I had no idea where. PBS automatically takes the book off your list when you decline to send it, but you can repost it later.

Yes, I've done this, but you have to be super organized. You need to remember to remove the book from both sites (i.e. to delete it from PBS if someone requests it from BookMooch). It can be more of a headache than it's worth, it's up to you.

HTH! Feel free to ask more questions, it can be confusing at first but it's a great, pretty streamlined system in my experience.

I just ordered Harry Potter 5&6 and the whole Narnia series. I have also ordered a couple about a bunny and her brother Willowbuy(?) and one about airplanes.

The thing I love about PBS is that you can buy credits from the site to order books from other people. Credits cost $3.45 each, which is not a whole lot more than it costs to mail a book these days. I don't have many books to list anymore (Freecycled a lot), and I'm terribly disorganized and have a hard time getting mail out on time anyway. So this is a nice way to get bargain books that I want to own instead of borrow from the library.

One question though what if you get multiple request for your book?
You never get multiple requests for your book, because the system is set up in a way that as soon as a book is requested it's removed from the available books list.

Do they usually have a few years-old publications or do they have newer publications?
It depends. Most of the newer publications have a huge waiting list, but eventually they'll come around. I've been waiting for the Omnivore's Dilemma for over a year.

After I post books and don't get much response for my books can I cancel the post (if I just want to give them away) or do I absolutely need to commit these books to send away via this site?
You can take them out whenever you like.

Can I can post my books to multiple swap site and send it to whoever respond first?
You can, but you just have to make sure to remove it from the first site.

How does the poster choose which one to send the book?
The poster doesn't. It's first come, first serve. The system will send a notice to the first person on the list as soon as the book becomes available.

Or do I need to keep browse everyday see if my wishlist came up and apply to the poster..?
You'll get an email as soon as you come up as the first person on the wishlist, and you never apply directly to the poster.

We've been doing PBS for over a year, and I love it. We've swapped so many books and it's been great.
