not sure if this is the place to ask this or not, if not if someone could point me to someone that can help...or where I should post it...

My M/W had suggested that I ask about starting to take goat's rue now in the last few weeks of pg in order to help my milk once baby gets here....( i have breast hypoplasia and took GR with my last baby after it was DX when he was 11 days old, so I am familiar with it)

does anyone know or know of anyone that might know if this is something I can do or not?

I have read that Goat's Rue is contraindicated for pregnancy, and I've never found a reason why.

Me again.

I found this link to a place that sells goat's rue, and they do not recommend it for pregnancy. It could be just to cover their @sses, though.

Like I said, I couldn't find a reason why.

Also, and this is anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt, I've heard that goat's rue acts on the body in a similar way to Metformin (glucophage), which has been determined to be safe when taken during pregnancy and lactation. Even with that, though, goat's rue and Metformin aren't identical, so I wouldn't chance it.

Should be safe in moderate doses.

yeah that would make sense because supposedly my condition can be caused by PCOS ...which is what they prescribe the metformin for etc...

hmmm....
I have been noticing though that I am getting shooting pains in my breasts this pg, versus previous pgs,so maybe the effects from last time are still there? I hope so

Motherlove's website says goat's rue can be taken at the end of pregnancy, but I haven't been able to find any references for this statement.

Could be.

Also, you probably already know this, but with each subsequent pregnancy, your lactational ability, happily, increases!

Hi, I'm typing straight out of Mother Food by Hilary Jacobson.

.....
Pregnancy: Good general safety rating, but no extensive testing. Take goat's rue well beneath therapeutic dosage, for instance, one mild cup of tea a day. Mothers needing the medicinal effects of goat's rue during pregnancy might consider taking metaformin instead, under the guidance of their doctor.

Side Effect: can lower blood sugar, not to be used by diabetics except under the guidance of your doctor.

(skipping some stuff here)

Dosage and Preparation:
Tincture: Take 1-2 ml of tincture or 10-15 drops, 3 times a day
Tea: Pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the herb, steep 5-10 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

......

OK, the directions there are for AFTER the baby comes. Right now only drink the one cup of weak tea.

I have IGT as well and pregnant, and right now I'm taking 8 alfalfa a day from Shaklee. Been at it since 9 weeks and I'm 23 weeks now. I can squeeze a lil colostrum out.

So, I'm hopeful! Always hopeful!

great info thanks ladies

I don't deal with diabetes (gestationalor otherwise) so much as hypoglycemmia...so I AM used to blood sugar issues etc, I guess I can do the weak tea and play it by ear.

I have tried to squeeze something out, but it hurts so I stopped!!
Hoping that this time around I will only need to barely supplement if at all!!
