question what's CPD?

My friend mentioned that she had a scheduled C-section due to CPD. What's CPD?

She's such a sweetie, still wants to hear our birth story, but I just wanted to know what CPD is espec. because if she has another it is obvious from her comment that she thinks she has to have another scheduled one.

For all I know that may be true, but I don't recognize cpd.

CPD means cephalo-pelvic disproportion. It means that the OB thinks the head won't go through the pelvis for whatever reason... perhaps dilation wasn't complete, maybe the baby was in a bad position, or there were too many drugs on board. Sometimes the mother's pelvis is truly just too small. According to "Silent Knife", 85-90% of women can go on to have successful VBACs after a previous CPD diagnosis- even breech. And usually the VBAC baby is larger than the so-called CPD baby. I know this because I had a CPD cesarean 4 weeks ago today, and I'm doing my homework. Cesarean birth has risks to the mother and child far greater than attempting a VBAC.

so if it was scheduled.... maybe breech...?? but then why would she think she has to have a csection again?
We both know my friend who's a pedi... so maybe between the 2 of us we can get the information and see if she's open to suggestions.

Thanks for helping mtn.mama. Hugs on your beautiful little girl. Are you ec'ing your littlest??

CPD is kind of a blanket term, used to justify the 30% cesarean birth rate in the US, so it really could have been anything from mama's positioning to baby's positioning to pelvimetry. The typical medical model says "Once a cesarean always a cesarean". Even my crunchy OB says I shouldn't attempt another vaginal birth. But as long as my baby and I are safe then cesarean is a last resort for me. And yes, we are ECing our sweet little girl!
