I posted this in the Waldorf forum, but then I found this forum, so thought I'd post it here too:

I found this last night and am so excited!:

You have to sign up to get the pattern, but it is free. I'm going to make one in wool.

Here is a question for anyone who has made waldorf dolls before - what do you stuff them with? This calls for polyfil, but I'd rather use all natural materials. I figure push comes to shove I can stuff with cotton balls, but maybe there is a material avaliable that I am missing?

I think you are supposed to use unspun raw wool, so the doll becomes warm when held by the child.

I would like to try and help you, if I could but the link doesn't work for me.

Rats! This one might work:
http://www.freepatterns.com/list.htm...source=referpt

Or if you go to www.freepatterns.com and put "bunting doll" into the search, it will come right up. I think they're real cute!

So is there a convenient source for unspun wool or do you have to know a sheep?

ETA: I know what happened - I copied and pasted the message from where I posted it before, and it didn't get all the link info since it had been shortened. Details, details...

Search the web for carded wool. Prices are all over the map, but eBay has some good prices right now:

is carded wool or wool batting the same thing?

Thanks for the links! I found unspun wool at Hobby Lobby - but it was dyed pretty colors and 4 oz/$8 - so seemed a waste for stuffing.

Not quite. The carded wool--which I think is sometimes called "roving"--is a lot finer in texture, while the batting is glommed together into a sheet. But you can pull apart the batting really easily. I think that one of the quilt batting companies--Hobbs?--also sells wool batting in various standard quilt sizes, but that does get pretty pricey. I've not yet succumbed (for a quilt).

Well, the timing couldn't be any more perfect. I just posted a "Waldorf Dollmaking 101" on my blog today (here) It will tell you everything you need to know from resources, to supplies, links to lots of free patterns and online tutorials, etc. I hope that it's helpful for you, and good luck on your doll!

This pattern is cool - I've got the head and almost the body, and I realized that it could easily be adapted to make puppets as well!
