My 5 month old DS has become a spewing volcano.

(I should caveat this by saying that he's on Prevacid Solutab for severe refulx, he has laryngo/tracheo/bronchomalacia)

It started Friday evening, but Wednesday I ate some cheese, and we know that he has a dairy/casein/whey sensitivity (I know, I know, I should have known better). So Friday I considered it to be just a reaction to the cheese. But it continued all night, into Saturday, Saturday night no one got any sleep, started having a lot of congestion, trouble breathing, had to get his machine (suction) out twice...Sunday during the day it wasn't too bad, he took some good naps, although his nose was starting to run greenish snot. Sunday night it got bad overnight, he wasn't keeping anything down, very very fussy, a bit feverish.

So Monday I call the gastroenterologist. We recently switched him from a compounded Prevacid solution to the Solutab, so I wanted to ask if it was possible it wasn't controlling his reflux as well. I think that he might also have a touch of a bug, plus me having eaten some cheese, but I wanted to know if it was also attributable to the meds change.

THe gastro calls back and tells me to immediately stop nursing him and give him Pedialyte only for the next 12 hours!!! I questioned that, of course, telling them that I know the best thing you can do for a baby with vomiting or diarrhea is to breastfeed ad lib, they said to stop all milk products or risk him being admitted for dehydration. I calmly explained that human milk is NOT a milk product, that many people consider it to be a clear liquid, they said that it absolutely is not a clear liquid, and that I really need to give him Pedialyte.

So I politely hung up, not ever having gotten the answer to my question of whether the Solutab may not be controlling his reflux as well as the compounded solution did. And frustrated that yet again I've had a run in with a medical professional that just has no clue about breastfeeding!! I don't know what to do! I've shopped around to find a gastro that is the most breastfeeding friendly (a previous one wanted me to put him on Alumentin instead of try to figure out what food allergies he may have; another dr refused to even acknowledge that food allergies may be causing some of the problems). So I can't go to a different dr, but I need to find a way to educate them!! And oh yeah, stop the vomoting!
