What in the heck...

My little girl's a week old today, and for the first few days she was doing great, eating till she was full, eating from both sides, and finishing a feeding in about 30 minutes or so.
Now, for some reason, she can't seem to stay awake while she's eating. She'll eat for maybe 5-10 minutes and falls asleep, and despite what all I try to do to wake her (tickle her cheek and lips, tickle her feet, burp her) she continuously falls asleep.
The problem with this is that usually 15-20 minutes later she'll wake up crying because she's hungry again.
My husband and I are both frustrated, and I only have a few weeks to solve this issue before I have to go back to work. Help, please!

While it's frustrating, it is perfectly normal and healthy. Breast milk is soporific. It's supposed to be, for both of you. Her tummy is itty bitty, about the size of her fist. Breast milk is absorbed quickly and efficiently, so they eat lots of small meals instead of a few large meals, like older children and adults.

My one-month-old does this. It can be frustrating and can feel confining, but I'm trying to just enjoy all the cuddle time I'm getting to spend with him.

have you tried to entertain in other ways than bfing? kwim? my son would act hungry every time he woke up well i would feed him only to have the same sleepy baby thing going on....i tried to space a little more time between feedings and that helped...maybe she needs to comfort suck? also as babies get older some become very efficient nursers...
