Plus-Sized and Pregnant Tribe!! - Page 5

Jessica, I wanted to add that my last OB was constantly making me feel bad about my weight. They talked c/s at every visit and mentioned my weight gain each time too. If there was anything to that tube thing then I would have heard it. I was about the same weight then.

I wieghed about the same, maybe 315 just before giving birth during my last pregnancy. No one ever mentioned anything of the sort. Not the doctors, nurses, anesthesiologist or anyone else for that matter. It's absurd as far as I can tell unless you have some sort of compromised trachea.... don't let them frighten you...

So happy to see this thread! I am 28, 5'5" and weighed ~235 pre-pregnancy. I'm up to ~240 @ ~16w. My m/w has never mentioned my weight (she's quite the curvy gal, herself), but research online has made me paranoid about my weight. I've had body-image issues my whole life, and was truthfully a little scared to bring the issue up with m/w (my own baggage, not anything to do with her). It's so nice to know how may big, beautiful mamas there are out there with healthy birth stories!

I personally am having some problems - and everyone likes to blame my weight - but I had these types of problems in pregnancy when I was at a normal weight and younger. So that's just me!

Of course, my mother sites the one big chick she knows that had pre-e and premature babies. Nothing about the fact that plenty of "normal" sized women have the same issues.

So don't worry about the weight! Any issues that come up are mostly going to even if you're much thinner. I would just try and do your best so the primary caregiver doesn't give you problems and do not accept an induction or c-section just because you're overweight!

I went to the stupid appointment and they confirmed what I already thought. I have a beautiful airway!! The anesthesiologist said that it was only a worry if I had "no neck" because of fat around my throat. Most of my weight is in my tummy and thighs. I do not plan a c/s the doctor said it was just in case I needed one. I have had a normal and very easy pregnency. I haven't even had to buy new clothes, I just don't wear my jeans anymore. No problems and no worries as of yet. I think my doctor was just a worrier. On another note, I am kind of a dork. I started leaking today and was excited about it. Keep in mind that this is my first pregnancy!!! I have 31 days left until my EDD and I am starting to really get excited.

bump (cause someone started a new thread concerned about weight)
23, on my second, and going at about 280 and 5'4 right now. Not a good weight...but I've honestly felt fine with both pregnancies. Anyway, just wanted to drop into the group and say hello and introduce myself...may post more later...but I tend to lurk a bit.

OutOfMyMindyo!! Glad to see a new person on board!

Hey all, I'd like to take a general poll. I notice the other tribes on here have a list of folks, when they're due and other happy boppy things at the beginning of the list. Should we do that too? (Is that what the thread keeper does? because I can sure do that). Whaddya say? We can post SN, Age, Sort by due date, height weight... just kidding about that last part. Let me know what you think.

Oh, and my first CPM interview (I have at least one more, maybe two coming). Went very well. She's not a weight=bad person, and she in fact thought I'd be a great candidate for homebirth, even with my first. We joked that I come from good birthing stock (Paternal Gram had 7 kids, Maternal Gram had 8, my mom had 8), she figures I can sure hack it. I have a DEM interview next week, and maybe one more DEM interview. The CPM I met last week's record is about 300 births attended, 5 hospital Xfers, and only one of them being a c-section (the woman had a septum in her uterus allowing no room for the babe to emerge). Pretty nice record, if you ask me!

Oh, and look, more misleading research to harass heavy women...the misinformation drives me crazy.

Well, that article explains a lot about how I've been treated during this pregnancy....

At 18 weeks, I was diagnosed with borderline GD, but treated as if my blood sugars were off the charts, probably because of my weight. I was even told, flat out by an OB, that I could NOT gain anymore weight during this pregnancy. I followed their instructions and lost nearly 15 pounds during my second trimester. It really kind of scared me since I'd always heard it was bad to loose weight past your first trimester.

Yes, it is abusurd. Essentially, they are suggesting that women should diet during pregnancy. I can see coaching women to avoid the cheesey poofs, but not all women who's BMI is "too high" are bad eaters. I have gained a total of 20 lbs, and it looks perfect to me. Not an ounce of me gained, all belly. So.....the original 15-25 lbs MINIMUM really should be the minimum.

Oh I hate it when some stupid OB tells a woman not to gain weight!! GGGgggrrr!!! My last OB did that and I will not go back to them.

Teeny, I am 35, preg with #4 and due March 7
post #93 of 257
Here are my stats, Teeny :

I'm 39 (40 in November) and pg with #2, due May 6th

Thanks for organizing....

And I had my first ob appt and my ob said "I'm not worried about it" when I mentioned my weight. So that's good so far!!

Thanks for organizing, Teeny!

I'm 28 (I'll be 29 when Robin comes), expecting #1, and due March 18th.

Also, I just wanna say that the last thing a pregnant woman needs to worry about is the scale. I have had a messed up relationship with food and my body-image my whole life, but my baby has taught me to love and respect my body, and to listen attentively to its needs, for the first time ever! I certainly don't need ANYONE screwing that up by telling me to diet while I'm growing this baby, or that I am only "allowed" to gain X pounds. Thank god my mw agrees

I was just wondering...when did you all start to feel your baby move? I'm 18 weeks now and I am not feeling a thing. I thought I was feeling the baby a couple of weeks ago, but maybe it was "just gas" because I haven't felt anything in a while. Surely if there was something really wrong, I'd know by now right? I don't get my u's till next week.

Why is all the GD emphasis on the plus sized gals? I was reading that women in the bottom 10% weight are the most at risk for GD. Im guessing it's because most plus sized women I know dont gain much during pregnancy or actually lose weight so there is no shock to their system-while very thin women gain a lot of weight in a short amount of time.

Not sure exactly, except that it's all the rage in the medical world and in the media to say heaviness is the root of all evil, ills, tragedy, etc.

I will fancy up the opening of this thread sometime this week (on my lunch hour). Anyone who wants their name (screen name or otherwise), age, due date, # of babies/pregnancies. Just jot it down here!

I am on #4 and felt movement quite early. But each baby and each mama is different. Keep us posted when you get your u/s!

Just to update everyone because I'd stated I was having problems:

I have two midwives, planning a homebirth. MW-P was at all of my appointments whereas MW-C (the more experienced one) wasn't around as much.

Well MW-P suddenly started making an issue out of my liabilities. She told me she was worried that if ANYTHING went wrong at my homebirth, it was her family on the line. Suddenly things that weren't a big deal before had become one now...

My VBAC status (I'd had a c-section 12 years ago and two vaginals since), my WEIGHT of course, my higher BP (I tend to stay around 120/74 to 130/86, but that's normal for me and is not spiking), and my junky urine that is showing some protein, leukocytes and bilirubin from my liver that's not happy about the extra baby junk to filter.

All of these things are manageable or no big deal at all, like my weight and my VBAC status. The rest are something to watch to be sure my BP doesn't go up and I don't get pre-e.

So MW-P was pushy and basically saying I needed an OB consult. WELL what doc is going to actually say, "Yah! Go ahead and have a homebirth!" when a 300 pound woman (or any woman) walks into their office?!?!

I feel like she's pushing me out and I nearly walked away from my homebirth. But I waited to see what MW-C has to say and she's on my side. She still feels everything is in line for a homebirth and we're just watching for pre-e.

I am usually on bed rest and swollen with high BP and/or toxemia as of 3 weeks ago in my pregnancies. This pregnancy is showing nothing like that so far - no high BP, no swelling, no headaches, etc, even though I am bigger than ever. I am not working right now and just taking care of myself.

Soooooooo I am currently trying to decide - and probably will go ahead - about dropping MW-P from my case. I don't trust her now and have no use for doom and gloom over my head during my labor and delivery. She flat out lied about her intentions during my appointments when questions. I think she's just showing bad character and I want to be away from that.

So there we are so far! I am still planning a HB unless I suddenly get sick. So far so good!
