"How do you get chicken food from a chicken animal?" - Page 2

My son looked at a hot dog the other day and asked "Is that the tail of the dog?" He was so serious and I could barely contain myself. He also recently asked, while eating a chicken leg, how the leg "fell off" the chicken. I guess it's time for the talk. I don't want him to be imagining one-legged chickens pecking about...

DD is *mostly* vegitarian (she will eat chicken pieces every once in a while) and we have always been fairly honest with her. Actually, we sing the song from "friends":

The cow in the meadow goes moo
The cow in the meadow goes moo
Then the farmer hits him on the head
And that's how we get hamburger

She sings tons of versions
pig, pen, oink: bacon, sausage, pork chops
chicken, coop, cluck: nuggets (also, "then the farmer looks under its butt and thats how we get eggs").
an occasional verse of "then the farmer squeezes its nursies and thats how we get cows milk." Lately, shes been trying to come up with one for soy milk, lol.

We, personally, tell the truth because
1) we try to tell the truth to our kids
2) we don't want to give them impression it is a fact we are somehow ashamed of. if we felt it was morally wrong to kill animals to eat, we wouldn't eat them.
