Ok..I haven't finished it yet but something is bugging me about it. (maybe it gets cleared up at the end..I don't know)

First off I totally agree with the message of the book. I was even just telling my sisiter about it and she called after seeing a commercial with her own example of a subtle downplay of women in a commercial.

Now this is the point that is bugging me:
She talks aboutFinding Nemo and refers to Dori as Nemo's sidekick. she calls this one of those boy adventure movies..it is NOT.
That is not what happened in the movie.

Now my problem is that the other TV shows they reference I have never seen. Lots of Nick stuff...so I don't know if those are also relayed incorrectly.

I am not trying to take away from their point...I am WITH them on their ideas...it's jsut bugging me that they got that wrong and I just don't know if the other stuff is worng, too.

Wow! Yeah, um Dori didn't even meet Nemo until the end...she probably meant Nemo's father.

I read this book and loved it. I know there is another thread...

It's really opened our eyes to more of the marketing - I'm much more careful about what I buy clothing wise now than I was before, too.

Ok I am over the Nemo thing. The book is really giving me perspective. It's perspective into my own life as girl raised to beleive alot of stereotypes.
I definetly remember being the girl reading Cosmo and trying to pigeon hole myself and then wondering why I wasn't happy. So far my DD is really protected from a lot of it even though the book says that is nearly impossible.
My daughter does have a few of the toys they see as girl typing however since she doesn't watch TV the Barbies are not ever into fashion and the Polly pockets don't go to pool parties when she plays with them (I didn't even know Pollys were like that since I never saw a commercial for them but her friend has some and she wanted them. Her friend also does not watch TV but wanted them b/c they were tiny)

I wrote down the selection of books and movies they recomend b/c for us it is true that most of our books have boys in the lead roles.

Anyway...I would like others to read this book b/c it is very informative.
