NB pocket & cover pattern sizes

Okay, I'm searching and searching - and still slightly confused...

I have all my materials - and knowhow to sew some pockets and covers - BUT I don't know how big to cut the pattern. (LO has yet to arrive on the air-breathing side of life)
So, question is...how big?
I've looked at a bunch of patterns but perhaps it is my preganancy brain constantly farting - I need someone to clearly spell it out for me.

Thank you mommas....hope y'all are having a beautiful day...

Which patterns are you looking at using?

I like the "Shar's newborn" pattern on the Nappy Network site (where you will also find the Wee Weka patterns, which are also great). I also like the newborn (or might be small) MamaBird pattern. There are links for both in the first sticky, if you haven't checked it out already.

I would make several NB sized dipes for the first week or so when the umbilical stump is still on, but make more of the small size, because you will probably use them longer than the NBs will fit. I'd hold off on making mediums until the babe is born though, so you can adjust fit if necessary.

I made the Darling Diapers pocket fitted small pattern. www.darlingdiapers.com

What I did was make them just regular fitted with sherpa, 2 layers in the body and 1 -2 layer internal soaker. I did not put any closures on it and used a pin. It fit from day one (my baby was less than 7 pounds) with the front folded down toward the baby and I had to use only 1 pin to close it. They still fit and he is 15 pounds and almost 4 months!
