Just starting my diaper stash!

So I just bought a couple more diaps and when they come in, I will have:

DIAPERS:
1 xs Fuzzi Buns ($9ppd)
1 sm Heiny Huggers ($8ppd)
1 NB Heiny Huggers ($8ppd)
3 Kissaluv 1 ($23ppd)

ACCESSORIES:
8 Mother-ease doublers ($6ppd) (And really, why these when I have no ME diaps yet??)
1 sm Rikki Wrap ($5ppd)


SIX diaps? That's it?! I am shamed in the eyes of my fellow cloth mamas!

I just need to keep going and get a few at a time until I can say I am stocked. I don't know HOW I will find the budget to get 2-3 dozen diaps and accessories by November when we're scraping the barrel lately.

Oh well! THINK positively! I miss that about myself in this pregnancy!!

I ordered mostly prefolds. That way I know I have enough, and I can get some cuter covers. I also made some recycled wool longies and should hem some old onsies. I have lots of KL1 from dd, but they are very old, so I'm not too excited to use those again.

I know you've been sewing a bit, you should try some recycling some wool longies-it's really easy and cheap. And it would help with the clothing issue too.

I second the wool longies. And covers. It's addicting...

I'm blessed to have a ton of prefolds and flats from diapering my first two.

I am, however, in dire need of some fresh covers. I'll probably buy a six pack of Bummis Super Whisper Wraps from somewhere, sew up some recycled wool covers, and call it good.

Don't feel bad...I have nothing for this new LO yet! I'm still trying to find deals here and elsewhere on what I'm looking for and deciding 100% what I plan to use on the newborn bum!

If it makes you feel any better, I have no diapers, currently. But a friend has promised me a stash of Under the Nile small that she has and I've registered for a gazillion FBs Med and a few covers for the UTNs. I'm going to wait to see what I get at showers and buy what I don't get. I'm hoping that'll do me. I'm probably going to find myself on eBay come Thanksgiving. I'm really feeling my way.

I should do a bunch of prefolds and covers too, huh? I don't know why, but I am nervous about prefolds. I did want to get a batch of them to try with the newborn diaps and if I really really like them, I could just skip buying bigger diaps and go with prefolds.

What size and where to get the best?

Oh! I sent out a note on Freecycle and someone is offering me a bunch of EUC organic cotton diaps with covers. I don't know what they are yet - prefolds, fitteds, etc. I am hoping that definitely comes thru! Wouldn't that be nice?!

She says she's been hesitating giving them away because she wanted to make sure they would get used since she invested so much in them. Well, apparently my plea made her think I would use them. Keep your fingers crossed that these are what I need!

DH asked me today what we have for diapers. I told him we have about 6 dozen (mostly prefolds) and he thinks we are all set, but he doesn't "get it". I NEED to buy diapers. I am hooked. I need cute covers and woolies and stuff. Not just prefolds.

Well, YEAH. You need covers, maybe some all-in-ones, some soakers, definitely some snappis, some liners. Definitely some VERY CUTE covers. I mean, you have to make sure you're doing everything you can to fend off the possibility of post-partum blues. What could make a mom more cheerful when changing a poopy diaper than a totally adorable diaper cover? And you may as well get some cloth wipes if you're going to do cloth diapers. I mean, why go half way?

I keep going back and forth about prefolds...should I do prefolds in the early days and then switch to small FBs? Or just stick with prefolds until the LO gets into the FBs that I already have from DD?!?!

Hard to believe I have no stash yet but I'm still new to this and it's hard to drop a bunch of money on stuff when I'm still not sure.

But the enabling helps considerably.

And OBVIOUSLY I have to support all the WAHM's who are making all this cute stuff... and at least I am not smoking crack as a hobby... It is a healthy addiction! A good hobby. If I am spending my time buying diapers and not on a stripper pole, who is to deny me???

I am just now getting ready to start my stash also, but I am curious about something.

I just recently decided to go with mostly flats/prefolds in covers than AIOs. (Cost, drying issues, longevity, etc.) But I'm wondering why everyone swears by prefolds over flats.

If they are held up by the diaper covers, why not just fold a flat into thirds and be done? (aside from absorbency cause I can kind of understand that part). I was planning on getting some of both to try out, but maybe you guys can steer me in the right direction. I like the idea of being able to use the flats for more than one purpose like burping cloths. Drying is also an issue, I need one cycle on the dryer to do the job because I live in an apt with no balcony for air drying and have to do coin operated.

I love flats. I finally bought four dozen this summer--in preparation for camping--to add to my stash of prefolds. There is a crew around MDC devoted to flats, too. Just post on diapering, and you'll find 'em.

Grace, prefolds are just that--prefolded into layers with a thicker center panel. They are rectangular. Your typical diaper service quality Chinese prefold for infants, for example, is 4x8x4 ply--four layers on each side, and eight layers down the center. Flats, on the other hand, are just big squares. Mine are birdseye, and diaper service quality, around 27" square.

Prefolds only require trifolding to set in a wrap-style diaper cover. Flats need more folding, and as the babies age, you might need two, or at least a doubler. It's *slightly* more work at the front end, but I prefer flats now.

Kristina, drying time on flats is fantastic. They dry before you can even think about them twice. You'll never have stink issues--they wash super clean. And you can air dry them in your bathroom or around the apartment in a pinch, because even indoors, they're fast-drying.

Oh, another reason some might prefer prefolds is when someone uses a Snapp instead of just laying it in the cover and going. I use pins and Snappis, and the bulk of a prefold makes getting a snug, leak-free fit easier. But that's just experience talking--I've used prefolds for almost five years now. As I use flats more, I'm starting to get better at pinning and Snappi-ing them, too.

And OBVIOUSLY a baby needs diapers, no further justification of how I spend my time or money should be necessary, right? At least that is what I'm telling myself!

Grr... one of the small Heiny Huggers I ordered came in as a newborn size with the tag conveniently cut in half so the "newborn" was no longer on the tag. I HOPE it wasn't the mama who sold it to me and she honestly thought it was a small. That's just not nice otherwise!

Also, the small I did get in that seems in absolutely perfect condition after 7 months of use (with her whole other stash) ended up breaking a snap when my friend tried to open the snaps that I had opened earlier. Honestly, I had to laugh. I don't know if I can return it to HH for a new snap or if I shouldn't bother since that side still has one snap, it requires a cover, and I assume I would pay two-way shipping.

Sorry to hear about your Heiny Huggers, Gina! I hate when my fluffy mail lets me down. I just got some FLAMs that sounded great but the pics were really dark so I couldn't see the prints very well. 3 of the 4 are prints I wouldn't have bought if I could have seen them better. Not that they aren't still useful, but I was so disappointed!
