I'm curious

Why is it that hospitals insist on circ'ing the day after birth? Why can't they wait a week or so? I feel sad because with DS1 I never even saw with his penis looked like before the circ. and I also think that it can be a tough decision if parents have never really thought about it pre-children and I don't believe your first few hours as a mother are a great time to be making such a decision. I mean, my opinions have changed almost completely since having children. Things that I thought I would *never* do I do all the time now and things I thought I would do, I don't.

So what is their grand reasoning for doing it so early? Convenience?

Don't you know that newborns don't feel pain? That is why it must be done within the first few days. Otherwise, the newborns turn into *real* humans and can feel pain, thus not being able to wait a week or longer. <insert sarcasm here>

: : :

Recently I have heard a lot of people waiting a week or even a month so they can get breastfeeding under way before getting the circ. When we took Keegan to his 1 month appt there was another little boy in there who was born the same day and had the same name. We were talking and then they were called back. We were called back a few minutes later and we could here a newborn SCREAMING. Wouldn't you know, that the other little baby named Keegan was in the procedure room. :

2 reasons, IMHO:

1. The OBs want to be first to the circumcision money trough.
2. Captive audience. They can pressure you into getting it done since you're there.

All the above reasons PLUS...the insurance companies in most states ONLY cover the procedure if done in the hosital as a routine newborn procedure...once you leave...it's considered COSMETIC AND ELECTIVE and NOT covered unless medically indicated. NOW, tell me what magic Cinderella moment happens when you leave the hospital that changes EVERYTHING?@?@@?@?@?@?@?@??@?

Good Granny...that just really PISSED me off.

I have never given birth at a hospital but don't you get discharged after a couple of days or so? They have to do it then right away or else you'll leave and have it done somewhere else (or maybe not at all)?

Hey, I'd rather they NEVER pay for it myself...

The earlier they can get them the better, the later they wait, the deeper the Momma bonds and the less chance she would allow it to happen at all.

The hospital I birthed in, there was even a financial incentive. It was $275 if you did it before you left, but if you wanted to come back and have it done on an "outpatient" basis, the cost went up to $325.

Take care,
Tara

I wonder if in Arizona no insurance really does pay for it then, because I think most people here have to make appointments with their peds like in the first few days and have it done there. Which totally weirds me out, nothing near if something really tragic happens, abnormal bleeding or amputation, and I would think it would be more difficult for offices to "harvest" the skin, but maybe not.

I know there are some people here from phx, do you guys know more specifics of this? phx is pretty umm.. conservative, not liberal, but I know we have a high Latino population that probably adds to our high intact percentage but.. do you think more people may not do it here because they have to take the baby back for it to be done?

So many reasons and they are all wicked and perpetuate circumcision.

Obs fight with peds over who gets the money. Hospitals want money.

Here are some more reasons:

Its a real coup if they can circ before the Mum can even see the kid's normal penis. Circed will thereafter seem normal. Also the Mum will not know how extensive the circ actually is.

The longer parents wait the less likely they will request it. They will get used to normal and the more stupid the idea of circ will seem.

Newborns cannot scream as loud as older babies so the circing doctors will not have their feelings hurt so much.

Older babies resist more. "How do you stop the little tykes squirming around" one circer said in a physicians blog.

Cruelty. Nothing like a fresh innocent babe (who feels everything) to cut into.
In the circ videos, the doctors always seem to be smiling.

Any boy that escapes from the hospital in one piece is a threat to the system.

Circers have a huge emotional investment to protect, hence
"the younger the better".

I don't think parents actually request it. I certainly didn't when I gave birth in the hs with ds1! With ds2, born at home, we took him to see the pediatrician when he was a newborn. The pediatrician asked me if I wanted to have him circumcised. I said no. Then I asked him, "Why do you even ask? You said so your self that it wasn't necessary!" He blushed all shades of red! Then flustered, "Just making sure!". Yeah right, making sure if he can milk money! When Liam was a newborn and we saw him, (belly button issue - we don't vax, in case your wondering) the pediatrician didn't even dare to take his diaper off! He never ask if we wanted him circumcised. I was impressed with that. I've been staying with this doctor b/c I want to educate him more about circumcision each time we see him. He told me they don't teach this stuff in medical school.

Hospitals like to do this while the parents are most vulnerable. Mom is warn out from giving birth and Dad is exhausted from being up for days! This is a scam. They do this thinking it'll be their best chance to cut the babies. Sadly, its working. Few escape the knife. Why do you think there are so many parents who regret having this done to their newborns?

Another reason they are in a rush is b/c they then have to keep the baby a certian amount of time after it's done.

As a different poster reported in another thread (can't find it, sorry), she asked the DR why they don't do it on the 8th day, when Vit K levels are higher and he responded w/something like, "They're too strong & struggle too much then". Yikes! You've gotta question the value of any surgical procedure which depends upon the helplessness of the patient to be successful.

I'm in AZ and gave birth to my son at Banner Baywood. The pediatrician asked about the circumcision and we refused, but had we wanted it it would have been done the next day. Our insurance at the time was Health Net and they do NOT cover circumcision anyways. I think they would have charged me $175 or so. I ended up getting a bill in the mail a few months later for about that same amount and when I called to see if they accidentally charged me for a circumcision, they just said it was a general charge for the doctor's check-up. I still don't buy it. I think I got charged for a circumcision, but I'd rather pay to have my son intact than pay to have him circumcised! The doctor was pretty cool about us choosing not to circ. When I told him we would not be doing THAT, he said, "Good. It's not even recommended anymore."

One reason: the bigger they get, the louder they scream.
