How to stop my 14 month old DD from biting!

So DD bites me. Mainly on my arm or shoulder. She thinks its the funniest thing in the world. I have tried to tell her that it hurts me and to stop. She laughs. I tried holding her nose thinking that she'd have to open her mouth, wrong, and she laughed. It doesn't always hurt, but sometimes she gets in a good one and leaves bruises on my arm. I know that we are dealing with age and a communication barrier, so how do I teach her that biting just for the sake of biting is not acceptable behavior?

I have exactly the same problem with my 14 month old In fact I wrote your post last week. What I've been trying to do is, when he bites me or goes to bite me, I don't say anything or react verbally at all (that just seems to encourage him), I just put him down if I'm holding him or move away from him and try to engage him in something else. I hope this is going to work because it hurts.

my ds started doing that at right about the same age... he also would bite dd (mostly if she took a toy from him or if he even suspected she was going to take something he wanted). My phrase was "No biting, only kisses!" Sometimes I would (gently) place a hand in front of his mouth to block him from biting us. Amazingly, he did start kissing instead. The biting occurs rather rarely now (4 months later).

Though just this week he started hitting/pushing other toddlers... for no apparent reason other than just to see what happens. So I've been lurking on this forum looking for some new tricks to get through this phase!

Thanks. I'll try the "no biting, only kisses" and see where it gets me. Its hard not to react to her just because most of the time it's funny to see the expressions on her face.
