Theo is 21 months.

we were reading another of his baby books today -- DH think I force them on him, i do not !!! he brings to to me to read when i offer to read, or chases me around with them (or the tractor book).

So we were reading Hello Baby....

in it, as in most if not all of his books, the todder come to the hosital to see the baby.

I talk to Theo all day -- and i am still sometimes surprised when he answeres, or reacts to what i am saying -- as i am just talking, yk? like when i say "after momma put this int eh dryer we are going upstairs" and i turn around to see him at the base of the stairs -- WOW --- stuff like that still throws me for a loop.

well as we looked at the picutres, i don't read all of that one as the baby is a girl and we don't know what we are haveing and i trying very hard not to creat any unrealsitc expectations in him ....... I said "here Theodore comes to see Momma and the new baby at teh hosptial and gets to sit on the bed with us and cuddle. do yu want to come see momma and the new baby at the hosital with I go to get our new baby" and he nodded !!! so I say -- again, just kind talking, "well I will have to tell Grandma you want that" and he climbed down, went and got the phone, and brought it to me and -- ok then he threw it at me -- he is only 21 months, grace is not a strong point.

but uhhhhhhh wow ...... he really does UNDERSTAND what is going on around him ..............

Isn't it amazing! They are so aware and smart...

And so literal minded! "I need to tell Grandma" and boom, there's the phone! I love it.

It's such an amazing thing when they begin to develop language and cognitive understanding! My 2.5 yr old is still in that very literal phase. It's especially funny when a word has a double meaning and they only know one meaning of the word (the most common meaning), but you were using it with the other meaning. I can't think of a good example at the moment, but it's so neat to see their little minds work!

That is so cute!
That's why I love that 2-ish age--they pick up so much but aren't all that verbal yet, so you don't realize how much they know until they come up with zingers like that. So fun!

I love it too...though we haven't gotten into the new baby stuff much yet!

theo and i have been reading books and talking about babies since i got the pos test at 10 days past O ... DS knew before his daddy We talk about shareing nurse nurse and being soft to the baby, and how little the baby will do and that mommay will go and grandma will come stay and so on .....

I see no anxiety in him.

But it is nice, to think, hummmm maybe he IS getting a lot of what i talk about -- as much as he can anyway with his limited frame of reference.

However we do not talk about WHEN -- we just say "when the baby is big enough" -- he has not real frame of time reference, even to say "around hallween, or soon after " as we've told the older newphews, would mena nothing to him.

this must be a very impressive picture to little minds- we have the same book and while looking at the same picture, i said to my dd (2yrs) "oh, look, now the mama has two babies!" It was an off-hand comment, but it has stuck in her mind and now she tells everyone "two babies!" when she is pointing to my belly. a couple of times she has also said "two mamas!" Hope she isn't getting to fantastical about that idea. lol!

very smart with the phone! it is amazing!

that is so sweet! My 2.5 year old was watching A Baby Story with me - it was a C Section and he loved seeing the baby at the end. But now he keeps coming up and 'pulling' on my tummy and asking "Are we going to pull baby Ellis out?" LOL! Or he will say 'Dr. will pull baby Ellis out' LOL! Considering he was our uc homebirth I don't think he really get's it. We will however go to the hospital this time, so it will be interesting to see what he says at the actual birth (I hope he comes!)

My friend's 12 month old will shake his head no when he hears his name said in "that" tone. While I don't like when people yell or talk really strongly to a baby whom is emploring his world (unless it's a dangerous thing), it IS so funny!

Dd told dh- "There's a baby in a special house in mama's tummy. But it kicks me. And mama's tummy jumps!"

She also recently told me that she had a baby jumping in her tummy and it made her have to go potty real bad.

My son is the same age and he is amazing with what he understands. Though honestly I have not told him much about new baby. I will start trying now though!

Dd2 says she has a baby in HER belly!

She always laughs and squeals "Baby" when she's breastfeeding and the baby kicks her.

When we watch birth videos, she always yells out "Baby" well before there's any sign of one... This reassures me, as she seems to recognize the birthing sounds, etc, as being related to getting a baby!

Bronwynn does this! I know she's a bit older, she'll be 3 in two months, but she has been telling people for most of this pregnancy that she has a baby in her tummy. She still tells me that and she puffs out her tummy and says it's getting bigger! She also often says that the baby is "hungry" or "full" when she's eating. I'm just happy she's learning to identify her body's signals. I wonder what will happen once I'm not pregnant anymore. I don't think she really understands what's going on. She understands part of it obviously, but not really.
