Baby B - slightly elevated fluid...

had an u/s with a specialist today. Everything looked good - still 2 boys. Estimated weights are A - 3 lbs 2 oz B- 3 lbs 3 oz

The only issue that came up was that Baby B's fluid was slightly elevated. I have no clue by what amount or anything (I will be calling my mw in the morning).

Anyone have experience with this?

hmmm...

No experience. But, I'm interested to find out about it. Surely it can't be anything to worry about, right? Let us know what your midwife says...

Sounds like your babies are doing awesome!

Sounds like they are growing wonderfully!!

I think that if slightly elevated fluid was something to worry about, they would've told you more.

Ultrasound techs are really good at tossing you a piece of information that you have no idea what to do with until your doc can interpret it. It's good that you're calling your midwife, but like another poster said, if it were something serious they would have said more or recommended immediate follow up.

Those little guys are good sized! I know that you have to take the US information with a grain of salt sometimes, but at 28 weeks they estimated my babe at 2 lb 8 oz.

Wow, you're growing good sized babies! Are you measuring nearly full term yet? You're carrying as much as a full term mama. Wow! My babe measured 2 lb. 11 oz. at 27 weeks. She's a big girl too.

Do you know where in the baby's body the elevated fluid is? Location makes a big difference as to whether this is an issue or not. Though if it was a big issue I would think that your mw would have called you today. If you tell me where the fluid is I can tell you more.

Its the amniotic fluid, so I don't know where specifically its elevated - I guess just overall his sac is holding more fluid than is 'normal'. But she did emphasize that its just slightly, so maybe a temporary thing? Can amniotic fluid levels shift quickly?

OK, I already promised tonight not to wear my professor hat anymore, but here I go again:

If the amniotic fluid level is over 2000ml (95th percentile), it is a condition called polyhydramnios. If they said your level was only slightly elevated, than you probably don't even qualify for this diagnosis, but I'll tell you about it just in case.

Most cases of polyhydramnios are mild and result in few if any complications. Even if you do have polyhydramnios they may just want to monitor your fluid levels more frequently and check the baby more often for growth and such.

65% of the time, there is no known cause for polyhydramnios. Sometimes it can be caused by maternal diabetes or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, when one baby gets too much blood flow and one gets too little. This is only in identical twin pregnancies, though. Very rarely polyhydramnios can be caused by a congenital birth defect, but this is not common and if your biophysical profiles have looked good so far there is probably no reason to worry.

If you didn't hear from your midwife today, then I think it is safe to assume that your levels are only very slightly elevated and it is totally no big deal. If there was reason for concern they would have called you already. Ultrasound docs are really anal by nature (that's why they're good at their job), so they point out every tiny little thing. More than likely it is totally nothing.

Your boys aren't identical, right, Christine? Or do you know for sure?
Did you talk to your mw today to see what she had to say about this? Just curious.

They are in seperate sacs and have seperate placentas. But there's a slight chance they could be identical. I am thinking they are fraternal though b/c that's what runs in my family.

I didn't call the mw - their office closes early on Fridays and I totally forgot. I have her cell number that I could call.

I hope everything is ok. It sounds like you are growing nice sized babies!!!

Mama Bear,
Any updates? Did you hear from your MW today? I've been thinking about you!

Just wanted to give an update, had a prenatal this morning.

Nothing to worry about. They did a single deep pocket measurement and the number they got was 9. Anything 8 and under is considered normal. So its just barely over - no big deal.
Everything else is great. My fundal height was 38!!! My mw got a kick out of measuring it.

So glad all is well, Christine!
