Ahh, yes sweet little newborn diapers

I have 20 newborn fitteds (velour Muttaquins and sherpa Kissaluvs) that I collected when I was pregnant with ds, but my friend has all of them. She just finished using on her newborn. Actually she has all my maternity clothes and newborn girl stuff too LOL! They are still in excellent condition. I will probably knit a couple covers to use with them and sell the other wool covers that are in the set.

The only thing I need to buy is 12 Bumgenius pockets. I'm actually buying them next month to use on DS as we had a laundry incident that killed all our stash of BG (which were the ONLY diapers we had besides the NB ones). So DS is currently wearing disposables : Once the new little one is out of newborn fitteds + wool, I might buy another 6-12 Bumgenius to use on both kids. I'm waiting on those last ones as I'm hoping to get to buy some of the "blossom" colored ones : If I end up with 2 boys in diapers, that won't quite work

Also I may try my hand at sewing some one size fitteds (or pocket fitteds) to use on both kids. I might do this instead of buying more BG. I have a pattern and fabric, but very little time or patience... I'd use them with knit covers in addition to the pockets. They would be a good use of the leftover BG inserts from the diapers that I killed.

I'm a first timer, so I don't have a stash already, but I'm fortunate enough to inherit a friend's newborn stash, which I'm sure we'll supplement with a few things of our own-I know we want some pockets and AIOs and I'm not sure what she has. I may also get whatever small sizes survive her son, but I think for medium I'm on my own. Still, I'm very superstitious and it will be a very long time before we buy any baby things or discuss names or do anything like that.

I have definitely been looking!!! I am trying to do it as economically as possible though since we are really short on money. We are going to do a lot of prefolds (that is what my mom used on all of us, and I have known how to change one since I was 8) but are there any other diapers brands or systems or what have you out there that you guys recomend? I am also going to be all over diaperswappers and craigs list

I learned by scouring diaperpin.com and ebay. I think I watched ebay listings for something like 4 months. I learned so much (this is before I knew about MDC). I do recommend not buying all of the same brand unless you've used them before. Both my babies had different bottoms so some dipes didn't fit as well as others. I wish I would have saved my stashes but we've been strapped for cash since , well, since we found out we were pg with #1! I've always gotten more on ebay for my dipes than I paid for them. Hyena cart has beautiful stuff but it's often too expensive for me.

I'd really be interested in diaper patterns... do you need a serger to sew your own dipes????

My only issue with prefolds on infants is that they are bulky. So for two piece outfits the bottoms usually don't fit when the top does. Not a huge deal, but a couple pockets or AIOs usually are enough for outings, which is when they're wearing the cute outfits anyway.

For dd now we've got five pockets and that is enough for us. We go somewhere three or four times a week and I wash about twice a week.

Now when they're older, as I said before, I hate scraping prefolds. Getting poop out of a pocket is ten times easier as far as I'm concerned. But, we're poor so we'll continue to use them.

Also, if you're realy hurting you can make prefolds very very easily. We had TONS of hand-me-down receiving blankets and baby towels and I made a couple diapers. I also used a couple old t-shirts but I had a hard time sewing on them b/c of how the fabric rolls up when you cut it. We've used them for over six months and they are holding up really well.

I want to go to the local CD store before I order a crapload of things, so DH can see what they're all about beforehand and be willing to help me out with them. I want to go with infant PF/covers at first and graduate to bG! and, I have to buy a washer as well LMAO! I am all over diaperswappers right now looking for cheaper used, but I do want to buy the "first" diaper brand new in the store, just to say we did

We might buy our own this time around... but even if we do, I'll probably stick to fairly plain stuff ;-). CPFs or maybe some fitteds.

We'll probably also get a bunch of EC pants too... hopefully, we won't have a newborn coping with an unidentified allergy ;-), so Poquito Pants or OneWets will actually be feasible!

Nope! You can "turn and topstitch" instead. I think that looks much nicer anyway. Check out the diaper making forum, there are lots of links to free patterns

Just wanted to let you know that BG will fit from really tiny. I use bumgenius on both my 1yo and 3yo (actually she's goes on the potty now) and then we tried one on my friend's newborn when she was a skinny 7ish pounds. It fit her perfectly and she pooped in it while trying it on and it held the BF poo quite nicely My friend liked them so much she went and bought 12 BG pockets and uses them exclusively on her dd that is now 3 months old. I was just thinking that you want something easy for your DH like you said and you are planning on buying BG anyway, so I'd use them right away. You *could* buy some prefolds to use also just in case you had a teeny tiny baby or if you have a frequent pooper (which was my dd). Really the BG are awesome.

And nope I don't get $ for saying all that I've just tried way too many systems out there and been dumbfounded by how much easier the BG worked.

A girlfriends 10lb baby didnt fit into them for a few weeks, I bet it totally depends on babys structure. I dont mind spending the $$ on prefolds anyhow, $40 will get me all that I need and then I'll have extra inserts/rags afterwards (or, if I dont use them, I can resell them for just as much!). If the BG fit right away, that would be awesome, but I'm not going to take any chances with having to use sposies (dont wanna! nuh-uh!) if they don't. Just my reasoning!

I completely understand, I'm just prefold-phobic I used them for a long time and now I've been spoiled by easy diapers

Have you seen the new prefolds at greenmountaindiapers.com? They're shorter and wider so you don't have to fold down the front (at least not as much!) I totally want get some of the newborn size.

No, you don't! Just a regular old machine will work for most patterns.

We didn't fold down the front on the infant size, just when we moved up. DD was 9lb4oz and we didn't start for maybe a week so maybe since she was bigger we didn't have to. They were still more bulky than her FB.

I've been building my stash for well over a year, so I probably don't need anything, although I should go through and really count up what I have in each size...I've just been buying things I can get from stalking and things that seem cute. I definitely have not been economical about it, but I have a ton of very hyena dipes and covers. (Luxe, Patchwork Pixie, Firefly Clowns, Mutts, etc.)

We'll be exclusively CD-ing, and using a combo of prefolds (I dyed and embellished all of them last summer) and fitteds with primarily wool covers. I love my Mosaic Moons!

I got Laura's last Elbee number, so that will be coming up in a while. Then I'll order a bunch of Elbees in various sizes. Otherwise, I probably need nothing.

I;m not due until May, so I'm trying to hold off on buying any small size diapers yet...but it's really hard! i just started cloth diapering my toddler and they have such cute stuff out there. I love Sandy's so I'll probably be getting a few of those in the newborn size. I do not want to spend too much money on newborn diapers b/c i know they will only be used very little, so I may go with mostly CPF, even though they are not as pretty as fitted diapers!

I have plenty mediums from my DS but still need more small pocket diapers. I definitely want to get a few more S FBs.

I am also planning on knitting covers for both sizes, but I want to mostly wait until I know the sex to help with yarn color selection.
