Good book abouit various religions for 6yo?

Does anyone have any suggestions for good books explaining various religious belief systems to a 6 yo?

We are not Christians but are living in a predominantly Christian area. DS has started asking questions about comments his best buddy often makes about "going to heaven if you're good" and "living forever if you believe in Jesus." I have explained to DS that different people believe different things, and that I don't believe what his best buddy believes. DS seems to understand that but says he doesn't like it when people talk about God and Jesus and he doesn't know what they are talking about. So I've explained the whole Jesus thing to him in simple terms. But I would like him to have a general understanding of various religions, not just Christianity. He wants a book we can read together about such things. Any suggestions?

I'd like to know too. My daughter loves looking at the DK book entitled "Religion" she's curious about the art and dress and symbols and such... it gives us a chance to talk about other traditions and our own.

I'm curious too. Although ds is only 3.5 we live in a VERY small town and the subject has come up. Most of his peers attend sunday school. I'm not against religious education, but I would like some balance, and the only church that offers sunday school is rather fundamental. He's already asked me about God and Jesus, and to be honest I'm not really sure how to answer is questions.
Good topic, I'd like to hear more

If you want a book about different religions and denominations of Christianity, I recommend A World of Faith http://www.amazon.com/World-Faith-Pe...8016723&sr=8-1 .

This is an excellent book about God, different religions and faith in general, geared for kids. We found ours at a garage sale, of all things, but it's still in print, by the looks of things.

Hi!
Good timing on this question! I just got a copy of UU World (the magazine for Unitarian Univerrsalists) and in it was this article: http://www.uuworld.org/life/articles/35839.shtml
About just the question you asked. We are non-Christian UUs and often struggle with how to present religions to our son.
The sidebar of this article has several books which are good for general introductions in world religions.

Good luck!

I second the recommendation about the Unitarian Universalists! The Unitarian Universalist Association has great resources for learning about all religions.
We are also non-Christian UU's trying to help our son understand and respect all religions. It's quite an exciting journey!

you might find some recommendations on this thread -- http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=703937 . this question gets asked a lot and i've never found a definitive book that i'm thrilled with. most of them seem to presuppose a belief in G*d or dieties of some nature and don't really address atheism or agnosticism. i checked out this book, The Story of Religion by Maestro from our local library and thought it might be pretty good. dd1 wasn't really interested in it, though, so we returned it before really reading it.

I second the recommendation for "What is God" - I gave it as a gift at my neice's baptism a few years ago.

This is a FANTASTIC book -- it's called PEOPLE and it is a book with a truly GLOBAL view on everything from religion to work to dress etc etc.

I love that when it discusses religion it also talks about the fact that some people don't have any religion -- something that is OFTEN left out.

You might have better luck with a series of books, each one on a different religion. We are not anything really (I am UU, but my husband is not), though we live in a predominantly Christian town. However, my daughter's friend who lives across the street and whom she plays with frequently is Hindu. We were curious (me more than dd really!) so dh and dd got some books at the library. In the Religions of the World series we got I Am Hindu. The series also includes I Am Protestant and I Am Roman Catholic. There is also I Am Jewish, I Am Muslim, etc. No "I Am Wicca" or "I Am Pagan" though. They also checked out the Hindu book in the Beliefs and Cultures series. This series has a Christian book. These books also have some crafts and activities as well as information.

There are tons of other books that would be good. I would suggest you browse the children's section at your local library. This book is a bibliography with reviews/summaries about religious books for children on various topics including Christian denominations, ideas of God, practices, Native American religions and more.

Good luck!
