Are you working on birth music??

I was thinking last night that I want to start getting my CD together so I can listen to it now in preperation.

I am an odd ball though. I don't like all instrumental only. I like country and rock and dance/hip hop. Basically ANY song that makes me feel good.

One song I know for sure I want on there is by Rascal Flatts (country group) called My Wish.
I bawled today just listening to it on the radio, but basically it is saying "my wish for you...." and he goes on to say all the things he hopes for his childs life.

I am working on other songs now...but what are you doing?? any songs so far? I could use some inspiration!

I need to get mine together... my instinct is telling me to go with my Hildegarde Von Bingen CD- I am not religious at all and she is a 13th (or something) century monastic. I don't know what it is about it but her music is very soothing to me- it is angelic. I dunno... I feel like meditation music will work best for me. Anything upbeat and I would be out of my mind...

I'm sort of in a quandary about what I might want to listen to in labor... I think that last time around we took a CD of ocean sounds and a CD we'd made for Dylan (with stuff like Quinn the Eskimo and Feeling Groovy and Sweet Baby James on it). I don't know what I'm going to want to listen to during labor, and whether it's even worth the effort of putting together a CD. I can barely decide what I want to listen to on a daily basis. Trying to decide what to listen to while birthing... whole other level of significance.

During most of my labor with Dylan, we watched Gone With the Wind. My doula recommended that we do something to pass the time until I was in really active labor. I'm thinking we'll watch Dr. Zhivago this time around.

I would love to see everyone's list- Labor music is on my to-do list but I have NO idea what to put on it. One thing I know I want to have around somewhere is "Blessed Be" by Raffi:

Labor was so intense the first time. I had an ipod with all the preplanned music available on it at the birth center. However, when it came down to it, all I wanted was Total Silence. Like my senses were so overwhelmed that I didn't want to add processing sound to it all.

My ideal songs were ones that matched the intensity of labor, however. Stuff like Judas Priest, fast techno, Black Sabbath, or more mellow but still heavy like Deep Purple. Although I did have some Rachmaninoff Vespers in there in case I felt like uplifting gentle choral angel music.

I haven't put anything together yet. I did tell hubby I wanted him to get me the new version of (was it Johnny Cash's song?)... that burning ring of fire song. I told him I wanted it to play as I was pushing. I think it would be hilarious to feel the ring of fire while it plays in my ear.

Is that really dumb?

I made playlists for my MP3 player last time and completely forgot about it when labor started getting intense. But I also had two different ones-one that was loud and intense and one that was really relaxing just to be prepared for whatever mood I was in! Better put music on my to-do list!

It's one of a million things on my to-do list. I think I'll do some ambient music and some upbeat stuff since I can't be sure what I'll want (if anything!)

I've been making a few playlists while I listen to music on Urge. I've made the tapes before but never listened to them...but at home I'm sure that would be different. I just need to pick the list that sounds most appealing at the time You know..like playing "Discoinferno" when it's time to push..

Music is a big part of our lives, but I think I will just pop in a CD/song that I need in the moment...

Last time I chose mostly mellow, acoustic singer-songwriter stuff. This time all I can envision is Drumz > Space from live Grateful Dad concerts.

Anyway, I am sure if I tried to plot out a mix CD, the timing would end up being all wrong! And that would make me cranky.

Throughout my last labor I had David Grisman's "Dog Duos" on-- I think that's what it was called. The labor was so intense that I felt like I couldn't change the music or my concentration would be thrown off. It drove the midwives and nurses crazy . They kept asking if I wanted to change the music...

Now whenever I hear that CD I want to run out of the room screaming. DH and I joke that my DS must get a crushing headache every time he hears it (flashbacks, you know)

Don't know what it'll be this time. Maybe I can go for some variety.

I'll probably just hit shuffle on my iPod and let it go. I made all these mixes last time and I don't really remember hearing much of it. We did have a mix to put on right when baby was born though and it was very special.

I really imagine myself wanting to listen to lots of Marley and Dylan this time. I'm sure some SCI and Phish will come up too . I'll probably want to skip the They Might Be Giants though .

Wow, I think I have it all wrong. I am thinking "soft, soothing music.." maybe I should be going for more high-energy stuff... DH just got me an iPod that holds 2000 songs... that ought to get me through labor!
