Essential Oils for Pregnancy

Thread Starter
I am still working on finding out just what will help with heartburn and swelling I thought I would post a site I found helpful and see if anyone has anything to add on essential oils. My midwife is all for me using peppermint and is schooled in such things. It helps ground me when I can remember to use it.

I would not personally use peppermint even if my MW recommended it, but that is just me. I've done enough reading on it to feel like it's not safe since it can induce labor- that would just scare me. I'm not being judgemental, but *I* would not be able to live with the worry myself.

I'm still dealing with reflux/hearburn and we've done just about all we can for it, so I'm probably going to end up trying acupuncture next.

There's a great mama on mdc who has a tea company, Love and Tea; this tea has been helping me with my horrid heartburn issues. Tell her I sent you if you do get some!

I have this great book Aromatherapy for mothers and babys that you might be interested in getting (1.27 on amazon!!) and it does list peppermint as a no-no, but instead recommends using sandalwood oil, orange oil or mandarin oil as the best choices for heart burn/indigestion.

sounds lovely but I ma one of *those* unlucky ones with a floppy cardiac spincther (for which all mint etc will relax and make reflux WORSE) so no mint for me! *sigh* sooooo if mint stuff makes you worse (very possible) even gum.. then you are like me! esp peppermint..I have heard tell that enteric coated mint capsules work OK but I'm scared to try...

I know you're asking about essential oils and I have no advice on that. But for the heartburn and indigestion, my mw suggested papaya enzymes. I haven't tried them since mine is quite severe and I'm on medication which pretty much controls it. But, it seems that the effectiveness of my medication may be wearing off, so I may try to find some papaya enzymes soon to try out. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

My MW suggested peppermint for me, but the expert at my herbal supply store told me that peppermint for *external* use (ie essential oils) are NOT safe for pregnancy. Apparently ingesting peppermint (ie in a tea) is ok, though...

Honestly, I am receiving so many mixed messages on herbs and pregnancy that I am feeling crazed!
