Why vaginal birth is better for baby...

I came across an article in a mag I got at a chiroprator's office, and it had a list of all the benifits of being born vaginally, (vs. cesarean, so those baby's would recieve none of those benifits.) I don't have the article, but I really want to know if any one has any of this info, or maybe could post a link. The list was quite long, and really fasinating. I just love having info like this in my arsenal. Thank you!

I would love to see it, too--maybe you could call or drop by the chiro's office....maybe they will let you photocopy it, or maybe there is a website posted somewhere in the article.

Like you, I love to have good articles onhand!

Sorry, again, I DON'T have the article. I know there was info anout how the baby's face gets so squished that the fluid in the mouth and nose gets pushed out, so suctioning is not always necassary. Also, alot of info on the benifits of being in the birth canal. There were other things, dang it! I hope a midwife posts a reply with some knowledge. I just can't remember it all, it was a couple years back, but a long list and sooooo good. Please reply if know even a couple of things. Thanks!

I get you now....

Well, the benefits of being born vaginally are many, as you saw in the article. Yes, squeezing fluid out of the lungs (not just mouth and nose) is one of em--babies practice breathing in utero, so tend to have some amniotic fluid in their lungs at term. This lack of being squeezed out while in the canal, is why so many csec babies have 'wet lungs' and get respiratory help after birth.

Maybe you could google the topic... I can name many of the benefits physically, chemically, emotionally, but it would be a post as long as the article you mentioned! I was hoping you had some sort of access to it, so I would not have to write it all down myself, for clients, too bad. But, as I am in process of preparing a binder full of things for clients, I may just get around to writing it eventually...and then I'll post a link here.

What's you're talking about is the fetal heimlich maneuver, the chest getting squished on the way out clears all the stuff out usually. Also a good reason not to get an episiotomy.

Contractions, horomones, and the baby's active manuevering in labor and birth are all pretty important parts of the baby's smooth transition into the world.

My DH is a chiropractor and he puts out a magazine about natural health, called Pathways. He is a pediatric chiro and belongs to the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) they have a website the has AWESOME research like you mentioned.
The website is www.ICPA4kids.org. Hope that helps.

Besides the things already mentioned, being born vaginally gives baby beneficial bacteria that end up residing in the gut... cesarean babies lack that bacteria.

I'd like to see a compiled list!

I'm a chiropractor, and I've been trying to compile a list like this for awhile, and I'd love to get a copy of that article that you saw. Could you pm me the name of the chiro so I could get in touch with him or her?

Stacey, I also have Pathways in my office, and find it to be a wonderful magazine. So much great information and so beautifully presented! I'm an ICPA member too, maybe your DH and I went to school or seminars together sometime in the past!

The information that I have found so far:
For Mom - In touch with what's happening in her body - communication isn't cut off in the middle.
For Mom - the ability to move around as needed. Changing positions benefits everyone!
For Baby - When mom is in pain, natural endorphins are released to moderate the pain - baby gets the effect of those endorphins as well.
For Baby - traveling through the birth canal compresses baby's skull, and helps with establishing the flow of cerebral spinal fluid over the
nervous system.
For Baby - compression of their lungs through the birth canal helps to establish breathing once out.
For Baby - babies who have been birthed naturally have better success establishing a breastfeeding relationship and bond better with mom.
For everyone: less costly; don't have to pay an an anesthesiologist or a surgeon
For mom and baby: faster recovery
For baby: passing through the vaginal canal helps to give them beneficial bacteria for the GI tract.

Thanks so much for the list. That is the best so far. The Chiro's name is Dr. Roller. In Sandy, Utah. I think it was in the Pediatric Chiropracter (Pathways)? magazine. I THINK. It was also December 2006 when I read it. Not that that was when it was published.

This isn't the article you're looking for, but it has some info about the benefits of labor...

Oooh! Cool link, Lisa, thanks for that! I'll add those to my list.

And at some point, I plan to put this list in a slightly nicer word document format. When that happens, I'll post about it, and anyone interested can pm me for a copy.
