drowning in my registries

we got back from our vacation late last night and after 18 hours of driving and delayed fights, baby and i are totally wasted -- poor little one seems so sensitive to changes in the daily routine, as a rule, and yesterday was no different. s/he was up and about ALL day til around 3:30am when i got home last night, and has been super quiet all day today -- i get little reassuring wriggles here and there but s/he's a very active baby normally so this is odd and i can only assume s/he's recuperating from our adventures. i'm amazed by how, uh, baby-like s/he is in this way!

anyway, since i am also feeling less than spectacular i thought today would be a good day to tackle my registries, since my sisters and mom want them done so they can send out shower invites. i thought this would be an easy thing to cross off the to-do list while just sitting on the computer all day.

but if my head wasn't spinning before, it is now! we don't want a lot of STUFF and it's very important to us that we don't raise our child around a lot of unnecessary products. plus we are cosleeping so we don't need a crib or crib accessories or anything like that, and i have enough experience nannying that i know i personally will never use, say, a changing table. buuttttt we have big families that will want ideas for gifts and i'd rather not get a bunch of TOTALLY useless things, so i've spent all day trying to figure out what will actually get used and only registering for those things. we are doing one more mainstream target registry and one myregistry.com with "crunchy" and interesting items for our more crunchy/artsy and internet-savvy friends.

my big question is whether i need to register for things like, you know, onesies and sleepers and things like that. what about receiving blankets? are these things people will get us without us actually registering?? or do i need to give peeps an idea of what we actually want in that regard too? shsgjsghsgsh. it's amazing how many hours can just get eaten away by projects like this.

I would definitely reg for clothing and onesies and blankets etc.. useful stuff and that way you can reg fro waht you want specifically, I mostly reg for "useful" stuff.. basic layette, breast milk storage items, diapers and wipes: , boppy with covers and sheets etc,

I really need to update mine

eeep, not the answer i perhaps wanted but definitely the one i suspected!

now i just need to figure out how many onesies etc for each "stage" i need. i seriously have no idea.

I just updated, and for the record they just added a bunch of organic all natural bath and cotton stuff as well as the bis-phenol free Born Free bottles and nipples (for fellow pumpers!).. nice to see this at a mainstream store.. I think they carry Bumgenius CD line too..

Coming from somebody currently SHOPPING off a few different registries (seems everyone is having babies right now)...please register for the smaller stuff in addition to the bigger stuff!

My sister was just complaining the other day about how her friend didn't have anything on her registry under $40.

I know that going through and registering for all the little stuff can take awhile and be quite a hassle...but you'll be glad you did. Otherwise you'll end up with a ton of stuff that is either the same or not at all what you need. My sister essentially ended up going to Target and buying her friend a bunch of little things.

GL!

oh, i am so sensitive to this. i HATE big-ticket items and i feel really weird requesting them. i still add them because, well, they're something of a necessary evil (ie not only do we probably need a dresser : but also parental units like to buy those bigger items). but even with our wedding registry i had tons and tons of reasonably priced stuff on there too, probably because the concept of a registry in general makes me super uncomfortable. actually, my non-target registry is all stuff under $30 except for 1 item (a diaper bag), and a good portion of the target registry is under $30 too.

What you can register for depends on what site you choose, but some of the things that I've registered for (on either BRU or Amazon) include...
--a whole gamut of breastfeeding/pumping supplies, since i know that I will use my pump and that I will go through a ton of bags, wipes, etc. I've also purchased a lot of Medela stuff (like the steam clean pouches!) for other people to introduce them to a great product that they might not know about.
--a medela nursing footrest!
--a baby book
--weleda diaper cream and mylicon - both of which we went through a TON of with Dylan
--nursing tanks and jammies
--diaper pail
--boppy and covers
--a wide array of nursery decor, from nightlights to lamps -- nothing we absolutely NEED, but fun stuff that would be nice to have if people want to buy it.
--cloth diapers

In my experience, I have found that the people who don't shop from registries tend to buy clothes (and I've found they get them mostly in larger sizes, since the conventional wisdom seems to be that "everyone else" will buy clothes in smaller sizes and/or babies don't need the newborn size for long -- so you might want to register for the newborn sizes) and receiving blankets. I have approximately 14 million receiving blankets.

There's no way to prevent getting a few things that you won't really use, and there will always be a few things on the registry that you really need and don't wind up with. It's really hard figuring out how much you need of what the first time around, too.

Maybe we should start another thread for recommendations on how many onesies, jammies, etc. we have on hand or would recommend having on hand... I'm lucky to have a drawer full from Dylan, and am just figuring that whatever I have it how much I need.

i registered for the medela swing since the PIS seemed way too expensive for our purposes. i do *need* to pump so andy can take over a couple of feedings while i'm teaching for a few hours twice a week, but the swing seemed appropriate enough and i hear great things about it even though everyone of course always raves about the PIS. anyway, i'm telling you this because i'm curious what else you, my lovely experienced pump ddc friend, would recommend besides the pump and the corresponding bottle/storage set.
