Anyone have pubic symphysis pain last time?

I had terrible pubic symphysis pain in my 3rd trimester last time, and actually "dislocated" (or something) my pubic bone during birth last time and couldn't walk until the 2nd day when something kind of snapped back into place.

Anyway, I've noticed the past few days that when I get up too quickly, that same old pain comes back. It's bad -- it takes my breath away and makes me freeze for a moment until it subsides enough that I can take another step. It's worse after I take a long walk, too, which sucks because I'm trying my best to have a healthy, active pregnancy this time.

Could this pain really be coming back this early in pregnancy? I wasn't anticipating having this problem for another 5-6 months!

Yep... and the only thing I know to help is getting adjusted (i'm a chiro for those who don't know ). You may be able to help yourself a little bit by laying on your back, having someone hold your knees together while you try to separate them (use as much muscle as you can muster) AND do a pelvic lift at the same time.

That said, the pubic symphysis is the anterior portion of a very large bone and if the posterior parts aren't articulating with the sacrum well... doing that won't really fix the problem.

misalignments of the pubic symphysis are very painful and it's no wonder you couldn't walk for 2 days!!

ETA, your knees have to be bent when doing that move I described.

Thanks Monique!

Hmm, reading your post made me wonder ... I've always (well, since I was 18 or so) gotten a sore sacrum after long walks -- could that all be part of the same issue, since it sounds like the two bones articulate? After long walks, I've always had to lie on my back and pull one knee, then the other, then both in towards my chest for a while to stretch my sacrum (or, I guess, the muscles around it) and prevent it from hurting too much. Maybe it's all part of the same misalignment issue and a chiro visit would help? Thanks for the advice!

I wanted to say again it's really nice having another chiro on this ddc. I see pubic bone issues in a bunch of the preggies I see. I have told almost no one I'm pregnant, and I've noticed it's really hard not to tell my pregnant patients.

i had it really bad with my dd. but it didnt start untill about 24 weeks. my DH is a chiro, so adjustments definately helped but it kept returning. gosh, i feel bad for you. it really sucks. i am hopeing i dont have any this time around.

I too had it so bad I couldn't walk. I did get a belly bra which helped a bit. I'm hoping it won't happen this time, it hurts like crazy.

limabean - yes, I really think a chiro visit (but more like a regimen of visits prenatally) would help and help you understand what is going on. It sounds like a long standing problem. Studies have shown that joint degeneration begins within 72 hours of misalignment/fixation (that is because of the abnormal physiology that occurs with fixations). That's not to say you have arthritis... but movement is life. I always tell my patients that when something gets "stuck" it's no longer functioning normally (not getting the proper nerve supply -info to and from the brain-, not getting all the nutrition it needs and not able to get rid of the waste products at a quick and healthy rate... so it basically becomes a toxic environement). That said if you don't have a chiro you've seen before and like, don't be afraid to "shop around." From a patients' point of view, finding a good chiropractor can be daunting. Ask questions. I like chiros who explain what they are doing and why. A good place for referrals is www.icpa4kids.org.

rubyeta- I didn't mean to make it sound like one adjustment will make the pain go away for good. Pregnancy, from a biomechanical standpoint, creates a ton of stress on the spine and its supporting musculature. I forget the exact statistic (have to look it up- preggobrain here) but there is a correlation between every inch your waist expands and the stress increased on the lumbar spine... and of course since everything is so intimately connected, what happens to one part of your spine will affect the rest of the spine. I've had ps pain before and getting adjusted helped control the pain (and rest my mind that all was where it should be)... but I can't imagine just not doing anything about it...eeek. ouch. I tell EVERYONE I can't imagine pregnancy in the absence of chiro care. Not only from a comfort standpoint but especially because of how it affects the growing baby (in very positive ways).

christinespurlock - I've already told all my patients (had to give them some explanation when I couldn't see them a couple times in a row )

After I had my dd my hip was all out of place. I had to go to the Chiro for a few weeks before it got better. Then with ds it started to shift again once his weight started to put pressure on it. So I've come to love the Chiro when prego. I got that pubic pain pretty bad with ds so I know I'm going to have hip and pubic issues this time. It is not fun when you can't walk or stand up from all the dislocation in your lower self.

Obviously there is no substitute for chiropractic care but something that could help with the pain in the meantime is homeopathic arnica gel. I get it at our co-op and use it on patients with phenomenal results. Basically it takes the shock of physical injury (and pain is always a sign that something is wrong) out of the tissue to allow it to heal more rapidly on an energetic level. Patients seem to recover so much sooner on it. And it's only about $6 a tube.
