Brooke's comments on Applebee's

Hello my sisters
Thank you so much for your support. Just so you know ... this protest IS going national. I have someone preparing a press release. Watch for it! I see some posts about women going to Applebee's and nursing inside. We are NOT going inside. We have a bigger voice out on the sidewalk with a poster. I hope to see you on the 8th with a poster. This Saturday the 1st I will be having a nursing event in Fayette Mall from 1 pm to 3 pm. The mall is in no way being targeted .... it has a play area that has a BIG toy bottle that is tipped over spilling out milk. Nice!
See ya the 1st and the 8th.
Thank you,
Brooke Ryan

Just want to offer my support! I am hoping to make it to the nurse-out, but will be there in spirit. We're supposed to be out-of-town for the next two Saturdays, but I'm trying to rearrange my schedule. I will be there in spirit if I don't make it.

I was the one in Mother Nurture today with the toddler and baby while you were in there!

I'll organize the one at the Layton Utah or Riverdale Utah one.

My best friend and I will be at our Applebee's in Olympia by Westfield shopping town, and I can organize it, though I admit I've never organized anything like this before. Hopefully we can spread the word and have a good turnout!

You have 8 kids and you have time to cook?! I feel really bad now about my skills... lol...

You are a strong woman and I am touched by your story.

National? Are nurse-ins going on around the country?
If there's one in NYC, I'd be there.

Brooke, I'm so sorry this happened to you, but you are doing a good thing for breastfeeding mamas everywhere. I just sent this letter to Mr. Scanlon and copied all the relevent folks on the contact page.

Dear Mr. Scanlon,

I am writing to express my disappointment in your recent comments regarding the illegal interference with a nursing mother (Brooke Ryan) by Applebee's restaurant employees in Lexington, KY on June 14, 2007. Unfortunately, ignorant employees and managers do exist - thus the reason many mothers (including myself) carry a copy of state laws protecting breastfeeding rights in a diaper bag. However, your comments take this to the institutional level. Until Applebees, Thomas & King and you personally issue an apology to Mrs. Ryan and her family and release a breastfeeding-friendly policy to be followed by all of your restaurants and employees, I will boycott your establishments. I will also encourage all of my family and friends to do so.

The suggestion that the restaurants will provide blankets for breastfeeding mothers is absurd, and requesting that mothers use them would put your employees in direct conflict with the law in states such as Kentucky.

I would recommend to you the following guidelines for establishing a
breastfeeding-friendly policy:
http://www.promom.org/bf_info/for_businesses.html

I note with interest a section on your company web site called "Doing the Right Thing." You have an opportunity to "do the right thing" here, Mr. Scanlon. On behalf of breastfeeding mothers, I request that you do so.

Sincerely,
MS
Fort Wayne, IN

Brooke, I am too far from Lexington to be a part of the nurse-out, but I did send an email to the higher-ups at Thomas & King. I am sure you are dealing with a lot right now, but remember that you have LOTS of mamas here to support you any way we can. Thank you for taking a stand and doing it so gracefully. You are an inspiration!

I'd like to go with my 1yo on the 8th to either the Hudson, MA or Walpole, MA location. Anybody in the area?

Any RI moms interested in going to the Applebees on Route 2 in Warwick? It's right across from Babies R Us and the Christmas Tree Shop. Kelly, you out there?? Can we get the nursing Bellani moms involved?
