what is 'casing'?

i am going to try to sew a diaper that says u could use 'casing' on the legs or elastic?? i'm confused as to what casing is..the instructions say casing is 'better because it reduces wicking' (what is wicking and why is casing better?)

can someone show me what a diaper with casing at the legs looks like? and another pic of a diaper WITHOUT casing..

the diaper i'm trying to make resembles the fuzzi bunz diaper i guess (never seen one)...

wicking is when a material pulls moisture

have you ever seen the white carnation/colored water experiment? the carnation wicks the water up to the flower head; an oil lamp has a fabric wick that pulls the oil up to the top for the flame

if you have a material with wicking properties then i'm guessing that it would pull the wetness from inside the diaper to the leg band

a casing as i understood it is like a tunnel - you make a casing to put elastic inside of for a waist; but i'm not certain how they are intending to do it on a diaper

Hi again - I tried to help you with a fabric question a minute ago - hope I gave you some helpful answers there.

Ok let's see -

LdyBluNH@aol gave a good answer. Wicking means drawing the moisture (pee in this case) through to the front of the diaper where it's going to get your little ones clothes wet.

Casing is just a channel made for the elastic. It will prevent wicking b/c if the elastic is inside the channel it won't come in contact with the wet diaper insert.

This site gives instructions on how to make a pocket dipe. Her instructions discuss using casing, but her photo is a dipe without casing.

Do you have a fuzzibunz to look at? If not I'll photo one of mine and point out what the casing is for you - I think you'll understand if you can see it.
