I think my water is broken/trickling, but no real contractions (xposted in birth)

I'm 40 weeks on Monday, everything going fine, haven't yet called the midwife. Before I call her and start the water-broken clock, so to speak, I want some MDC advice!

I'm pretty sure my water has broken though it is just trickling- but it has that smell which I first noticed a couple hours ago in the wc and am pretty certain is amniotic fluid (um, smells like semen). While I think I've slowly been losing the mucous plug in the last two days (no blood in it though) and think I've been having really, really wimpy contractions today, there is nothing major.

This is what happened with ds2, and I wound up having to go in after 12 hours with still no strong contractions and getting some pitocin. At the time she told me to walk to get labor going, but that didn't seem to work and I think contributed to my exhaustion later.

I'm trying to rest, but any ideas? Nipple stimulation? (nursing toddler?? ) Or should I just rest and visualize and drink fluids and what not? I'm trying to calm down but think I've forgotten everything I've read!! This will be a midwife-attended hospital birth. Advice to get it going? Input on this scenario?? How I wish I reread my birth books this summer. I'm strangely nervous. Need some input from wiser birth mamas!

I guess this means no labor tub, too.

From everything I have ever read a trickle is most likely your forewaters and can reseal themselves. Hopefully someone who knows more about that can chime in (my waters break about 30-45 seconds before the baby is born).

I say rest for now and maybe meditate...work on keeping yourself calm and relaxed. Drink plenty of liquid and DO NOT insert anything...no sex, exams, etc.

I didn't know they could "reseal". I know with ds1 my forewaters broke in active labor and the rest at the very, very end. Will try to keep resting..

yeah i'd lay down if you can and see what happens.

i've never had a trickle. i've always gushed and then WAHM right into crazy contractions every 2 -3 min.

Rest, drink plenty, nothing in the vagina, birth pool is fine with broken waters, if you are concerned check your temperature. The main worry is infection so staying home and relaxing is the best thing to do. You are used to the germs in your home so that is the safest place to be. Waters can trickle for days without labor and still be in the range of safe and normal without any other symptoms (like fever or feeling ill). Nipple stim from a nursing toddler certainly isn't a bad idea. The bag can definitely reseal itself or things might just kick into high gear. I would rest as much as possible because labor is right around the corner one way or another.

My water broke, but no huge gush, just very wet underpants for a few hours. But I was so unaware that it could be my waters that I didn't do anything, or even think about it (until after the fact). I went about my entire day and night (New Years actually) until about 1 AM. Then I got to bed and a couple of hours later my contrx started hard and heavy and that was that. So I say live life. Be "normal" for now and don't think to hard on it. REmember Sanguine Speeds water was broken for three days before her baby came out. I think that the whole water broken thing and infection is much more a risk at the hospital. Personally I would wait up to 24 hours before I told my mw (if I was going to the hospital) and then I would prob. skew the timeline of how long it had been broken so they give me even more time for labor to be productive on it's own. This is JMO.

No advice, my water had generally broken at the time of birth but I am so excited for you!!

I did finally call, and she told me to call her around 9 tomorrow to check in if I'm not in major labor earlier, so at least I have some time. I don't know why, but I was sorta worried about infection (clear fluid though, no fever or anything, gbs neg), but it's not like I want to go in as early as last time-- that was a real drag. Contractions have picked up, but still wimpy. We'll see. Thanks. I think I could have 14 kids and still be nervous. :

Take it easy....breathe!!! I would say rest up for the big event. I wondered today if I was leaking and still not sure. I have been wearing panty liners so much with the excess discharge and when I would sneeze I would wet myself . Being preggers with #5 has done a number on my bladder. Anywho, I have changed pantyliners 3 times today and have never had to do that before and it was heavy feeling. So it smells like semen? I guess I will smell my pantyliner!!!

Positively awesome labor vibes coming your way~~~~

With ds1 my water broke and they said "his head probably sealed the bag back up." I would be totally comfy at home for the time being in your situation but as pp said, keep everything out of your vagina.
