Best board game for smart kid?

Okay, my dd's been invited to a party for a friend's son, who will be four. The dude is very smart, very verbal, and apparently is in to dinosaurs. No problem there -- I know where in our city one can find the plastic dino motherlode, so that's not a biggie.

My problem is that he likes board games and I would like some advice. My dd loves chess, but that might be too advanced.

Suggestions?

My DS is 4 and is very much into board games. These are his favorites:

*Chess
*Dinosaur Monopoly
*Brainquest
*Scrabble

I'm thinking chess for sure -- I haven't played the others except for Scrabble.

You could try this site, it has a lot of different types of games. The games there are available elsewhere, but it might give you some ideas. It's not a random site - it does look like they have games that would interest a highly verbal, smart kid.

Games by Gamewright (card games), and Think Fun games. DS likes Square by Square (http://www.amazon.com/Think-Fun-5951...dp/B00021H92Y). From Gamewright, he likes Chomp (http://www.amazon.com/Gamewright-217...8965965&sr=1-1) and I plan to get him Rat a Tat.

What about Blokus? SET? Apples to Apples? We play Apples to Apples with the 4 year old as judge - he reads the adjective and then judges our entries. Connect 4? Trouble? - both of these may be good for pre-chess skills. Yahtzee?

My 3.5 yo ds loves checkers, sorry, boggle jr., and a balancing game called Cagola that we got at Target for $10. Here's a linky.

Cagola is probably his favorite right now, but the little cargo peices are very small, so if the 4 yo has a younger sibling, this game might not be a good idea.

Rush Hour from ThinkFun was a great hit w/my family. I had even bought one for my teen age nephew and got the jr. edition for my dd.

I love the site EducationalLearningGames - there are just too many board games to be believed! I did a search for dinosaurs, because it is quite a popular theme, my own son loves them and I have a couple of dinosaur board games, like this one: The Dinosaur Game.

Anyway, here is the link for the dinosaur search at ELG: EducationalLearningGames

But I also searched "Dinosaur game" at Amazon and got this list.

(I thought you might like ideas on combining the two interests)
