Fleece Help

Thread Starter
I made some pull on fleece covers with some random fleece I found in my fabric bin. They seem to leak easily.
the covers still feel dry but urine will soak anything touching outside.

Did I possibly use the wrong type of fleece? I have no idea what kind it is.

Does fleece have to be lanolized? How would I do that?

I only used one layer because it is so hot right now, would I have to use two?

I really like them becasue they are so soft and cute. I would like to make more, but I would like to know what I did wrong and how I can fix them before spending a bunch of money on more fleece. Thank you!

Random fleece out of your bin is likely not the right kind. If you make it two layers, that should help. If you use polar fleece or malden mills fleece (usually only buy it online, but it is great) , then that should work better for you.

You only lanolize wool that has not been processed. It won't help you to lanolize fleece.

Wool and fleece are used to keep baby dry. If a diaper is too full, it will squeeze out and get stuff touching it wet. You either need to change more often, or you need to switch to a fabric that will hold the wet in. Fleece and wool are the most breathable cover fabrics so they will also "leak" the most when a wet diaper is inside them.

I have had luck with non-malden mills fleece, but I normally use two layers. Two layers won't be hot, fleece is really breathable. It's almost all I use, and I live in Arizona

What you're describing really sounds like compression leaking. When fleece is compressed, instead of spreading the moisture out over a large area so it can evaporate, the pee just goes right through...if the diaper underneath is really soaked, or you're using microfiber, it can just squish out too.

If you want to try boosting the water-resistance of fleece, wash the covers and add fabric softener. It repels water Just don't put diapers in the same load.
