Puff the Magic Dragon...

Thread Starter
Love it? Hate it? My ds just got a beautiful book with illustrated lyrics of Puff the Magic Dragon and a CD of the song. But, I can't read it without getting all choked up. I always found it so sad as a child and that stuck with me. As a kid, DH thought that the dragon died ("slipped into his grave" vs "cave") and also didn't really like it. DS (3) seems to love it- wants the song over and over, is asking to have the book right now. I don't think he really understands it, but I know some people who do really like the song/story.

So, any traumatized Puffers out there? Or Just meloncholy? Or didn't effect them? Or maybe you like it?

What do you think of Puff?

I love it, but it always made me sad.

I think it makes me much sadder now though than when I was a child, as a child I was certain I would never forget Puff, like Jackie did.

Time to introduce it to DD I think

I love Puff but it does make me sad. I'm one of those strange people who like sad stories. Puff the Magic Dragon, Romeo and Juliet, Tristen and Isuld....It makes me cry and I love it!

I love it. It's such a bittersweet song/story. Dh was traumatized by it, because he thought Jackie died. He didn't realize that it was about a boy growing up. He only understood it, when he heard me singing it to our kiddos.

I love that song, because my father used to play it on his guitar (and sing it to us) when we were little. I downloaded it from iTunes for nostalgic purposes. My 3 year old really took to the song and likes to sing it; that made me feel warm and fuzzy.

I can't sing it without crying...but There's Something About Mary spoiled it for me a little...(that's the right movie, isn't it?)

I was watching a Peter, Paul and Mary special not too long ago and it had me crying hysterically. It's bittersweet to be sure.

Meet the Parents? I can't hear the song withoug picturing Robert DeNiro asking BenStiller, "Are you a pothead, focker"? :

I used to get all sad when I heard it, but, yeah, that movie kind of changed that.

I'm the lone weirdo. I loved Puff and still do. It always made me feel...I dunno....FULL or something. Like cemetaries make me feel that way. Connected to a whole world, a whole line of lineage and age and life. Growing up and looking back on childhood memories are things we all share no matter who you are.

So good for your kid for digging a classic tale!

Makes me a little sad. Kind of like Velveteen Rabbit sad.

It came on in the car as we drove my brother to be deployed overseas (not war, just an overseas base) and I always think of that and get sad.

Get out of my brain. When I saw the topic was Puff the Magic Dragon my mind
went instantly to the Velveteen Rabbit. It's a big favorite of my dd's even if she cries
half way threw every time we read it.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called honah lee,
Little jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea..................

c'mon....who doesn't love puff!! :

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!

Aw, man! I read the Velveteen Rabbit to the young ones and blubbered though most of it. I love them both but it makes me so sad. I start crying every single time. Same with the movie Fox & the Hound.

All the bittersweet growing up tales makes me :
!
