unsightly toilet ring?

EDIT: see my post #13 for what worked for me!

how do you ladies get rid of this stain ring and get your toilet white again?

i usually clean every week but i let it sit for 2 weeks once and now i can't get rid of the ring stain. i used baking soda and vinegar.

today i tried borax and leaving it on there for an hour. still doesn't seem to work. my last step would be bleach and leaving it all night.

anyone got any suggestions that work for them? and if i use bleach, should i dilute it?

thanks all!

??? we tried the "let it mellow" thing with our pee and now i can't get rid of our nasty ring in the toilet. i tried all that u mentioned and nothing is working. well, our toilet is about 50 years old and this weekend we are replacing it with a 20 year old toilet!!! I am going to make sure this one doesn't get that nasty ring!

I have this same problem so I am intersted in the responses. Back when I used cleaners, I used Sno-Bowl and it dissolved it upon contact. Now that I use baking soda and vinegar, the toliet is *clean* but it still has that ugly ring. I have heard of people using a pumice stone and some elbow grease to remove it...and once you actually cleaned it, it woudln't really be nasty to do so. I just havne't had the gumption to actually do it yet.

try using the pumice stone (like for your feet) and elbow greese, it really does work!

(FWIW, bleach- my brother just glugs a glug in the bowl and leaves it sit)

me too! i have been reading a bunch on that pumice stone and a coworker recommend it also. i'm trying to let it soak in vinegar for the night. if no improvement there, i'm getting a pumice stone tomorrow.

Have you tried a Magic Eraser? I've had pretty good luck with it.

A pumice stone can take the chrome off a trailer hitch, so you'll get the results you want. The problem I've had with a stone is that it scratches up the area you're cleaning which then seems to attract more icky stuff. I guess I'd suggest that if you're going to use it, go easy.

This is what happened to our old toilet. I used the stone and it got so scratched up that I was never able to clean it without a pumice.

My Mom gets these little scrubbers from a janitorial company. It's two squares...one is a very thin metal-type material with small holes in it and the other is a softer scrubby. It worked like a charm, without scratching the surface of the toilet.

Don't use pumice stones for your feet. You use "Pumie" -- the pumice stone scouring stick meant for toilet cleaning and BBQ grill cleaning. It crumbles easier and it's the crumbles that are the abrasive cleaning power.

Check your grocery or discount store cleaning aisle. Or hardware store.

My toilet is 50 years old and I get some kind of brown build up but it washes away easily enough with soap now. I put a Chem Free cartridge in there that I got from greenfeet.com.

It suggest using two cartridges if you have a particularly bad one so I may have to try adding a second cartridge. But I was happy that it made it so the hard water stuff is easier to get out with just the soap and toilet brush now. I don't have to Pumie.

You can try using a denture tablet. Let it fizzle up in there overnight and scrub with brush. I have to get my dad to try it at house and report.

Or use a cola soda. 12 oz can in there 1 HR to overnight. Scrub down in morning. I haven't ever done that one though because I'm scared it will attract ants but it supposedly works.

My dad said they used Koolaid packets or something in the army.

last night i tried the half gallon of vinegar and soaked paper towels around the ring overnight. the ring is still there but just a bit lighter.

astrophe27, do you mean to say that if we use the pumice stone from the hardware store, which is for toilet, it would not scratch the toilet like the pumice from beauty store?

i just want to make sure because i am planning on going out at lunch to get it at lowes.

I use "The Works" : Only once a month though! It's the one hard chemical I use because after being a housekeeper at a motel, I just can't stick my hands inside the toilet bowl any more It works really, really well though :

My goodness! Wear gloves girls! Don't go sticking your hands in toilets!

Another vote for the pumice stone & elbow grease, here.

i found what worked for me! the pumie scrubing stick! i got it at lowes for $2.97 and it said on the package it's gentle and no gloves needed!

i got home, tested it on a side first by wetting the stick and gently scrub back and forth. voila! the ring was disappearng! i can't believe it only cost me $3! i got my toilet to look all clean and like new again. it didnot look like it scratch my toilet at all but i'll keep a close eye on it.

it is located with the cleaning supplies isle and is in the very top row.
