If you´re really interested then Salvatore Battaglia´s "Complete guide to Aromatherapy", is exactly what it says - covering oil profiles, chemistry, body systems, treatments......It is very well referenced but does not give the sort of recipes you were after for home use (though it does tell you which you oils have which properties), as it is aimed at therapists and healthcare professionals. It cost me about 40 GBP.
The other book I mentioned as being a bit boring is called Essential Oil Safety Data by Tisserand & Balacs, though it is only concerned with toxicity and only references to studies regarding this aspect.
For hospital nasties, I believe that Tea Tree (
melaleuca alternafolia) has had some research proving it´s effectiveness against MRSA - though I am sorry I can´t reference this. I have also seen a commercial blend made by Maggie Tisserand (the Tisserands are an aromatherapy dynasty!) called M.R.S.A - The M was for melaleuca, Ravensara, umm after that I forget.
hang on *googles*

just one of many links I came up with typing MRSA essential oils into google.
For around your home there are many EOs which have antiviral, antibac properties - perhaps the most obvious are lemon and pine, hence why cleaning products traditional had these fragrances.
Proof regarding EOs can be come by, but a lot of reported properties come from traditional use. The lack of clinical evidence is largely down to the fact that there aren´t vast EO companies who can fund this work and EOs can´t then be patented and revenues gauranteed to the researching company - unlike BigPharma plc.
