making cleaners w/ EO's and pregnancy

OK, I know there are a bunch of EO's to avoid during preg's, but is that only for topical use or would it also apply to cleaning solutions? I am wanting to make my pg friends some non-toxic cleaners, but don't want to endanger their pg's...
Thanks!!

I take it you mean household cleaners? If so then no worries, so long as it isn´t being used on the skin directly.

There aren´t many EOs that are proven dangerous to unborn babes anyhow, and very few of those that are will be available for the public to buy. There was a thread a while back on just this topic (in this forum) and I posted a load of stuff there if you are interested.

Thanks to you both for that link! What a great discussion you have going on there!

So, Sadystar, can you recommend a book for us not-trained-in-aromatherapy folks to use as a guide? I love the tidbit about the jasmine and sandlewood for the bedroom, DH and I are TTC for almost a year now, and any help to put the fun back in it is more than welcome!
As far as cleaning, the tips you left were wonderful! I feel much better about making some safe cleaning gifts for my lovely mamas-to-be! I know that many EO's can claim antibacterial/antiviral properties, but do you have any hard evidence of THAT? I am a nurse, and find I am much more happy if I see "proof" of a claim, especially since I am trying to keep from bringing home some nasty buggies when I work in ICU. If the boring book with all the evidence is available to the general public, I may be interested in purchasing, also as a reference for my non-believing friends in the medical field that believe harsh toxins are the only things that can kill germs! And many of the recipes that I have (from Better Basics for the Home) claim antibacterial but not antiviral.
Whew! Sorry about the run-ons in there, once I get an idea in my head, I can't stop the fingers from typing!:

If you´re really interested then Salvatore Battaglia´s "Complete guide to Aromatherapy", is exactly what it says - covering oil profiles, chemistry, body systems, treatments......It is very well referenced but does not give the sort of recipes you were after for home use (though it does tell you which you oils have which properties), as it is aimed at therapists and healthcare professionals. It cost me about 40 GBP.

The other book I mentioned as being a bit boring is called Essential Oil Safety Data by Tisserand & Balacs, though it is only concerned with toxicity and only references to studies regarding this aspect.

For hospital nasties, I believe that Tea Tree (melaleuca alternafolia) has had some research proving it´s effectiveness against MRSA - though I am sorry I can´t reference this. I have also seen a commercial blend made by Maggie Tisserand (the Tisserands are an aromatherapy dynasty!) called M.R.S.A - The M was for melaleuca, Ravensara, umm after that I forget.

hang on *googles* http://tahilla.typepad.com/mrsawatch...ssential_oils/
just one of many links I came up with typing MRSA essential oils into google.

For around your home there are many EOs which have antiviral, antibac properties - perhaps the most obvious are lemon and pine, hence why cleaning products traditional had these fragrances.

Proof regarding EOs can be come by, but a lot of reported properties come from traditional use. The lack of clinical evidence is largely down to the fact that there aren´t vast EO companies who can fund this work and EOs can´t then be patented and revenues gauranteed to the researching company - unlike BigPharma plc.
