Dyson - what are the differences?

I'm looking at getting a Dyson (by Christmas - that's my goal!), but I've overwhelmed by all the choices. At first I thought you just picked a color you liked, but then I realized that the different colors are different prices. So then I assumed that the higher priced ones must be stronger or more special... but I just read at epinions that actually you're just paying more for accessories. :

So now I have to figure out what accessories are important to me. But I don't know. On my current Kenmore vacuum, I only use the hose with the wand - to reach cracks in the couch, and then also in my car. So, I don't really know if I would even use any of those other attachments.

I do have 2 shedding dogs, so I thought I "had" to get the animal. But then I found out the Animal just offers more accessories. Well, just because I have dogs, that doesn't mean I need more accessories, does it???

A friend of mine has a Dyson Ball. She let me borrow it, and it was very nice. She says I HAVE to get the Ball because it turns on a dime. She was right, it does make tight turns. Does the regular one not?

And what is the difference between all these: regular, Drive, Ball, etc.?

How on earth do I make this expensive decision?! Please advise!

P.S. Has anyone tried the Eureka wannabe? I forget what it's called, but the commercial makes it look like it's trying to be a Dyson.

: I'd like to know too. All I know is that this weekend I registered to win the purple one, which is supposed to be for homes with pets. I have an indoor dog and I'd love to win it! :

I have the animal DC14. The DC 17 purple is a newer model.

It is very confusing

All I know is we use ours all the time

Love the attachment that goes underthings. Needless to say there are no dust bunnies under our beds

Eureka Capture. I have one. I've never used a Dyson, but my understanding is that my Eureka is pretty comparable with a smaller price tag.

The day I bought it, I vacuumed the living room with my old vacuum. Cannister was full of hair (we have two cats).

Then I went over it again with the Eureka. You would not believe how much stuff it still picked up. It's great. I can get down on the floor after vacuuming, lay my face right up against the carpet, and not see a single hair. And it really picks up a lot of dust and dirt and such, too.

I love my Eureka Capture. Even if I had the money for a Dyson, I'm not sure I'd want to spend it when there's a cheaper alternative!

I have a dyson. I would get the base model. You get enough attachments with it to do most anything that you want. We have the floor attachment thingy and have only used it once and probably paid $50 more to get it. That being said If I found something cheaper and comparable, I'd get that. The dyson is way spendy in my opinion.

I recommend the lightweight Dyson, but they all work very well.

I think mostly it's just different attachments. Although there is a pink one that is only pink because it's for breast cancer. The base model (the yellow one) is awesome in my opinion (and I have cats). Target had a special this weekend, I don't know how long it goes on, but if you bought a Dyson there you get a $100 Target card back with your purchase...

My mother-in-law has the regular Animal, and I just spent the weekend using it a lot at her house. I didn't notice that it didn't turn on a dime. I don't think that's such a big deal.

About the cost--I worry that a lot of the cost of the Dyson is to pay for their (very clever and persuasive) advertising campaign.

What advertising campaign?

I only know of them because a number of years ago somebody told me about the guy and I checked out his website.

Oh, you caught me! My DH is a TV junkie, so I get a lot of second-hand TV. I suppose I'm also in the target demographic for their commercials, so I notice them and they're making an impact . And there are magazine ads, too.

I think the dyson is soooo pricey and we just couldn't afford it so I got this vacuum cleaner...

and I'm sooo in love with it. Great price. I think around $150 compared to the hundreds of dollars you would spend on a dyson pet vacuum.
