Kaitlyn’s Birth Story

My husband, son and myself left our home at 4:45 am to head to the hospital for my scheduled induction. I knew already that I was having contractions on my own and I was very excited about that. We got there went through all the paperwork and prep work until 6am. At that point is when they started the pitocin. I already didn’t like the feeling of being attached to equipment. The nurse put my iv in my hand and that it really hurt because my hand is so bony and continued to bother me until it was finally taken out at 2am the next day.

My wonderful Doula showed up around 7:30 am. I was having some contractions, but nothing that was too bad yet. Around 10:30am, my husband and son were still there waiting for the doctor to finally see me. My two year old son was just an angel and sat and played the entire time. I could not have been more proud of the little guy! However, knowing that we could have a very long day ahead, we decided that my husband should take the little one home for a short while and come back after I have made some progress. Finally the doctor came around 11am and broke my water. We also learned that my little girl was posterior. So our goal was now to get her to move around to a better position. We tried the peanut for a while, we tried rocking in the rocking chair, we tried sitting in many different postions with hopes of her moving. My contractions started to get a lot more intense. My doula helped me so much with the pain by breathing with me and rubbing my lower back. I have never had back labor before…. Ouch!

I went back and forth about getting an epidural. I did eventually get one around 3:00pm and I did indeed regret it. The doctor had to poke me 4 times to get it in. It hurt to the point that I cried. My blood pressure then dropped to an alarming low and they had to give me medicine and oxygen. I felt sick and really hated the feeling of my legs going numb. I was now stuck in that darn bed. Plus, I continued to feel so much! I felt the contractions and the pressure… just dulled a little bit. Then my little baby wasn’t doing well either and they decided to turn off the piticon. Yep…. After that point everything stalled out and slowed way down….. darn it! The only positive thing is it gave me a chance to rest.

My husband and son showed up again around 3:45 or so. Not much was happening and we all were eager to get things moving again. They tried to move me around the bed into different positions trying to get things moving and trying to get her out of the posterior position. Tick tock….. nothing….. finally around 7 pm they started up the pitocin again and YES…… huge and fast progress. I was feeling everything!! They told me that if they gave me more medicine in my epidural that I wouldn’t be able to push, so I passed on it. I started to push around 7:40pm and she was born at 8:02pm. She was 7lbs 12 oz and 20 inches long. The moment was the so wonderful!! Holding her in my arms was so amazing! My ‘high risk” baby was finally safe in my arms. The moment after birth I told the nurses that I was ready to start nursing. Soon after that she was happily nursing! It felt like heaven. The doctor showed me her SUA (single umbilical artery). It so thin compared to my son’s cord. Also…. No stitches needed! I loved hearing those words from the doctor while everything was being finished up.
Within the hour my Doula had left and so did my husband and son. I was pretty upset saying goodbye to my husband and son. I had never been away from son ever and hadn’t been without my husband in 8 years.

They took my new little love and myself to our recovery room where we would be until I left. I got about four hours of sleep on and off that night. They came in and checked us about every hour. I really hated when they had to take her for her ‘weighing in’ as that called it. I wanted her by my side. At one point when I finally feel asleep at 6:30am they came in to talk to me about pictures being taken. I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to go home so bad.

The next day I begged two separate doctors to let me go home. They told me that I could leave but I would have to leave my daughter there. No way. My husband came with our son and his parents for about an hour and half that day. Boy… when I finally got to go home at noon after only sleeping an hour and half that night was WONDERFUL! I was in the need of some real loving care! However, my daughter and I did get to really bond just the two of us during my stay at the hospital. Those were some very special moments for me!!!

Also, the other real spectacular news was that they did do an ultrasound on her before we left to make sure that there no internal complications from her SUA and the results showed everything as normal!!!! SO WONDERFUL!

Now we are all home!!! She is so beautiful and healthy! Things are starting to have some normalcy to them. My son is adjusting to his new role as a big brother. My husband and I couldn’t be happier!!!

Thank you for reading!
