I think you DO do something. What you do is greatly needed.

Even if parents only send in items for parties and special occasions but never physically help out, that is the same as helping out. It's the parents that do absolutely na-da/zero all year long (with no good reason) that make me sad for the child.

There is a lady at my kids current school who has 5 kids total and 3 of her kids are in school and the other 2 are home all day with her. She still has time to volunteer and drags the little ones along with her and in fact last year had 3 little ones since her youngest started kindergarten this year. Where there's a will there is a way.

I try to volunteer as much as I can. Ds in in private school now and the place really seems to run on volunteers for activities and things like cafeteria duty. I am a member of the parent-teacher group and the chair of a committee. I will also be doing my duty in the cafeteria. I think it is important to volunteer some time to the school whether it is private or public. It shows your child that you are invested and care about what goes on in their school. Volunteering also gives you the chance to see firsthand what goes on in the school.

I voted yes. I've volunteered every year that ds has been in school from being a chaparone on field trips to assisting with group projects on a monthly basis. I've done lots of prep work (cutting, sorting, pasting, making copies, etc.) I'm also a regular volunteer at school parties/functions.

This year before school began I led an inservice meeting to raise awareness for anaphylatic food allergies - identification and emergency treatment.
