birth story

I think I will have enough time to rough in the birth story. It is never ending around here. I knew coming home would be overwhelming, I just didn't remeber how overwhelming. :

I woke up about 1:15am Sunday and didn't feel well. I went to the bathroom and snacked and didn't feel any better so I woke my husband. He essentially rolled over and thought nothing of it because I haven't felt well in months. Then, it dawned on him what I was saying. I made up the spare bed, we got dressed and called a neighbor over to stay with the sleeping kiddos and left for the hospital.

We arrived about 2:15 and told them that though my contractions were not regular or painful but that I had a history of precipitous labor and a gbs infected baby (dd1). A friend is the night nurse supervisor and previously a l&d nurse and we chatted about a party I had skipped and what not. They checked me and I was at 5cm but still not obviously in labor.

At 2:40 the nurse said she would let me hang out for an hour, she would check me then and see if she could admit me. I once again tried to explain about need abx 4 hours before delivery and she would not start the iv until after I was admitted and could not admit me until I was in labor. I really felt like she wasn't listening to me so dh and I sat and chatted about how frustrating this was. I had delivered my last two babies here and they should really take me seriously at this point. He predicted the baby would be here in less than half an hour (3:10).

About 3:00 things really began to pick up so he went to tell the nurse, she finally decided to admit me at 3:08 and Linus was born at 3:16. I didn't even realize I was pushing until after the head was out and I was told I would have to push again for the shoulders. It all happened so quickly I have no idea about much of anything. I apparently was a screamer and had to get to 10cm awfully quickly, it was very intense.

I did tear (oddly enough, only with the boys, not the girls) and require quite a few stitiches. As I do not numb well it was very uncomfrotable and the ob kept telling me she was 'almost done' repeatedly. I was able to talk them out of pp pitocin for the first time and feel much better for it. The after pains are still very painful while nursing 3.5 days later. Because I did not get the abx, the baby had to stay the full 48 hours but was able to room with me. It is never nice to be in the hospital but I do appreciate the calmness of only having one child to semi-care for. I know many of the ob and ped nurses (many deliveries and I volunteer with the peri-natal work-group in town) so I knew somebody on every shift and they mostly left me alone.

My parents were able to come down Sunday afternoon and stay with everyone and surprisingly enough were helpful. They then left once dh got home from work on Tuesday. He is a professor and classes started Labor Day so I am pretty much on my own during the day but many friends are emailing with offers and he is trying not to run late (as we have soccer every night this week that *I* hope to miss). Other than the noise, chaos and mess of 5 children (homeschooled) we are doing great.

I'm lovin all the quick labor birth stories. But I have a question...do nurses and doctors ever apologize when they realize they were so wrong for not listening to the laboring Mom? I was just curious.

Although it's frustrating about not being admitted earlier to admit the antibiotics, it sounds like the baby is great and healthy and for that I am so glad!

Good birthing job mama!
