Classic children's videos/movies?

Thread Starter
There was a Puff the Magic Dragon thread on TAO (about the book, not the video) and it inspired me to make a list of children's books and movies that are truly classic.

I had no trouble finding books... there are tons of lists on the Internet! But I can't find one for movies.

So I'm starting my own... what do you think are classic children's movies or books?

I think Puff falls into that category, personally... as well as Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas and the video for Velveteen Rabbit. Maybe The Fox and the Hound, too.

"The Red Balloon." (that's a movie. though there's a book with stills from the movie, too. am talking about the original version from the '50s ... I understand there was a remake done but haven't seen it, so am not referring to it.)

"E.T." Just saw it again, showing it to my kids for the first time, and they were just blown away.

"Star Wars." The first one (meaning Chapter IV). For older kids.

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." (Sorry, it's Disney. )

"The Lion King." (Sorry, that's also Disney. )

"Bambi." (Yet another Disney. )

"Mary Poppins." (Oy vey, it's a Disney deluge. )

And "Babe." (Is that Disney? Not sure.)

"The Muppet Movie." Though I do think the Muppets are too sophisticated for children to truly appreciate ...

There are more in the back of my head. But am not bringing them to the front right now.

"Babe" is a Univeral Pictures production, mostly filmed in Australia as far as I know. Not Disney, though.

Some recent Pixar films have been really good, although I think it is a bit of a furphy to ask for non-Disney classic films... DIsney dominated the market for so long....

'Finding Nemo' is a modern day classic.

Also my kids like Julie Andrews films such as 'Mary Poppins' & 'Sound of Music'.

'The Wizard of Oz' is also good when they want to feel scared.....

'Chronicles of Narnia'
'Flubber'
&
'Spaceballs'

are also very popular with my two. Definitely not Disney.

Flubber and Chronicles of Narnia ARE Disney.

I second Bambi and Mary Poppins.

My daughter really likes Pollyanna.

There are lots of holiday videos I consider classics: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, The Year Without a Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny is Coming to Town.

The original Peanuts stuff: Snoopy Come Home, A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc.

Wizard of Oz, though I agree that is scary.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the original)
Maybe Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang though I remember that as being long and occasionally dull.

Old Yeller, Black Beauty, Benji

I'll post again if I think of more. I like this thread!
