Linkin Alexander is Here!

Linkin Alexander was born at home on Sept. 4th at 11:50PM. He was 8lbs 0oz and 20" long.

Here is my birth story:

I had my regular weekly appointment with the midwife at about 5pm and everything was great. She said the baby had dropped and my bp and urine were good too. She had to do the strep B test and since she would be in the area I asked her to check me. I had been having bad back aches that I could time for about a week. Well it turns out I was 90% effaced and 2 cm dilated. She said the baby was plastered on my cervix and wasn't budging. We all joked that the baby might come earlier then expected and made a guess of Sept. 13.

I went home and at about 8pm I noticed that I was having regular contractions every 10 min or so. They were noticeable but I could still talk through them. I didn't tell DH because I figured it was a false alarm. At 9pm my water broke! It had meconium in it so I called the midwife right away. She said as long as it doesn't look like pea soup and the texture is very watery then we are fine. It was like water so all was good. She said to get some rest and call when the contractions are 5min apart lasting 1 min. She told me to get some rest to save my energy for the big day.

Well DH and I were totally unprepared and didn't even have a stop watch lol. I knew the contractions were coming pretty steady though. I don't know why we don't have any darn clocks in the house Embarassed We needed a hose for the birth tub too so we decided to go to Wal-Mart before heading to bed. On the way to Wal-Mart I was having contractions every 3-5 min lasting 50 seconds. I could still talk through them and just kept thinking OMG this is going to be so hard if it starts out this intense. I called my midwife and she just told me to relax and that labor can start out a little intense but die down quickly.

We got what we needed and headed home. I lost all sense of time right about now. I wanted to get in the shower and that lasted maybe 10 min. My DH kept saying "lets just lay down and try to sleep". I was so angry because there was no way I was sleeping! These contractions were intense and about 2 min apart by now!

I think around 10:30 I needed to sit on the toilet backwards. My DH told me I was having contractions every 2 min and they were lasting 90 seconds. I was in denial big time and I think at this point my saying was "this is going to fast. This is not normal. This is going to fast". I said "Call the midwife right now". I was vocalizing through the contractions so loud and couldn't hold back. It was so freakin intense. The weird thing was I didn't think I was in labor lol. It only hurt way down low and I was always told that it would start at the top of your uterus and contract down. DH kept saying "I think your in transition" and I was laughing at him because I didn't even think I was in labor lol. So DH called the midwife and told her she needs to come right away because I am freaking out. I remember at this point thinking that she would come over and I would only be 3cm dilated. I thought "ok if this is what labor is like I can't do this...props to all the natural birthers out there but omg this is so hard".

Next thing I know I feel the contractions doubling. There is no break and the energy was just so strong. I started crying and told my DH that I wasn't getting a break. I was way gone in labor land. My body was pushing. I couldn't control it but didn't tell DH because the midwife wasn't there.

DH said that I should go on the exercise ball because it will calm me down. I tried it for maybe 3 seconds and then hopped on the bed on all fours. I just did what my body was telling me to do. I lifted my bum up high and pushed my face into the mattress. At this point I was clearly pushing and the midwife just arrived. She walked in and said "wow this is serious!". I was naked and didn't care lol. She told me she could hear my pushes and they were just what I needed to do. She finally got all set up and just told me to listen to my body. I did and my body pushed so hard. I had no control and felt very animal like. I was growling so loud I shocked myself Very Happy Even at this point I was saying "this is to fast, I don't think I can do it". The midwife was like "ummm you are going to have your baby out in 10 min so just push". The ring of fire was intense as most people say. I absolutely hated this. The 5 min of that burning was by far the worst but then it was all over and he slid right out. I remember probably asking every 5 sec...."is he out yet? how much longer? is he out yet?" Then finally the midwife said YES HE'S OUT!!!

I flipped over and the midwife put him on my chest. He was crying and just so gorgeous.

I got all cleaned up....hopped in the shower then tried breastfeeding. It has been tough so far because I have inverted nipples. I am using a breastshield and he is doing just fine with that though. I am going to book an appointment with a LC first thing in the morning so we are off to a good start. I am determined to breast feed so this is just a minor bump in the road that we will figure out.

Oh and I didn't have any tears at all but the hemmroids are really bad. I hope they go down in the next few days. The labor was 2 hours and 50 min from start to finish and if I had to guess I would say 15 min of pushing.

He is sleeping right now but I just can't seem to. I know I will regret it later lol.

If anyone has tips on the hemmroids I would love to hear. My DH said there are about 6 and close to the size of walnuts. It's almost as painful as the labor lol.

CONGRATULATIONS!!:

That is a great birth story. I'm impressed with how well you listened to your body, even though you didn't think you were. My experience so far with laboring women is that a lot of times they don't think they are doing what they need to when they totally are! And your dh sounds awesome. I can't believe what great suggestions he made, even if they weren't the ones you wanted

Anyways, I'm so pleased for you and can't believe you had your baby last night!! What a great night!

As for the hemmroids....sitz baths and frozen witch hazel pads are your friends!!

Pictures sometime, maybe???

Congrats.. Mama..

What a wonderful story, you told it so well, even though you didn't think you were in labor, maybe that helped your body go so fast, you didn't fight it... What an awesome story..

**I had/ have flat nipples and in the beginning w/ DS1 I used a pump just to draw them out, but he managed with them, very quickly, and I actually only used the pump the first few times of nursing..

Now they are still flat, and my new guy has no problems drawing it out.. Remember, you little one doesn't know anything is different..

I also have some hemoroid cream that I've never used, as I didn't get them.. The hospital gave them to me after the birth. If you need me to I can mail it, or I believe you may be able to buy it over the counter..

**here's a discreption of the box..

Smaller than a toothpaste box.. White box w/ bright yellow and black packaging..

Dibucaine Ointment USP 1% made by Fougera

**active ingredient Dibucaine

take care mama.

AWESOME story mama!!!!

you did great and BTW, you are not the only woman in the world who was in transition and thought you were not even in labor

I think thatis par for the course when it goes that fast...my lat baby came in 1 hour 58 minutes and it wasn't until I was pushing that I realized, oh man, nowonder the contrations started out so fast/hard...I was almost DONE

GFU! Congrats! Can't waitto see pics

Oh and for the hemmoroids...one thing I have done inthe past is to put ice on them,...crushed ice inside a disposable baby diaper (cut the top layer open in the back and stuff it FULL!), lay it in your underwaer, wear until melted then toss!
Sounds weird but I swear it works for those and if you had any tears

Congratulations!! That is such an awesome birth story. Welcome Linkin Alexander!!! I hope that your H's shrink down. My midwife suggested soaking a disposable diaper in water and freezing it, then placing down there. Witch Hazel is supposed to help as well.

Congrats!!!

I am not in your due date club, but I had to comment.

I imagine from your location that you have not heard of the famous Lincoln Alexander from where I live.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Alexander

He was the first black MPP and Lieutenant Governor in Ontario.

What a great name.
