I had a Mirena and loved it, and was pregnant with in two months of getting it removed. I work in a women's health clinic where we do lots of IUD insertions, and the risk of infertility is really, really remote. Although I respect anyone who makes a choice based on their personal estimation of risk (I'm choosing no u/s in this pg for that reason, though I know many people do u/s with no problems), I would really recommend that anyone considering an IUD do her own research on the actual risk of infertility with IUDs before deciding against it on that count. And make sure you get your info from good, current sources. The IUDs on the market in the 1970, especially the Dailkon shield, were dangerous, causing lots of infection and fertility issues. The IUDs on the market today are very different -- well researched and quite safe. Most women do not experience hormonal side effects from the hormonal IUD, other than decreased periods.
And I know this is a bit snarky, but geez, when a mama says NFP is not for her, let's respect that in our responses to her questions, rather than trying to get her to spring for a method that she feels isn't going to work with her lifestyle. She knows herself best. (And I'll try to practice what I preach, and not advocate for my favorite BCM when the topic is some other method entirely.)
