Proposing a new Sub-Forum: TV-Free Families - Page 6

I would certainly participate in a TV-free sub forum. We're TV free (we do get Netflix though) and I couldn't be happier that our daughter won't have that droning, deadening influence in her life.

That probably comes across harsher than I mean it to--I'm just amazed at how far I've come from the sullen and isolated child I was--TV was most often my only company and I watched A LOT. I can observe some neuroses and negative thought patterns in myself, and it doesn't take much thought to see how much that is connected to the hours of television programming I watched. And the magazines I read and the advertising I saw...So there's another set of things that could potentially be discussed in a new sub forum.

I would definitely like to see the TV-free sub forum be inclusive to the broader topics of anti-commercialism. MDC seems like the prime place to host commercialism/TV-free discussions; there's much less to discuss on the matter when children aren't involved, you know?

I would appreciate a place to fine-tune my beliefs, especially as my daughter gets older. We never plan on having TV programming in our home again and we're avoiding almost all screen time for her until she's at least two, but after that, what? I'm just not sure yet, and I want to talk about it!

I think I'd be interested- it would be helpful for people at various stages and ones who are starting the "transition".

I'm in. The decision is not an issue. DH and I have been TV-free as long as we've been together. There are questions to discuss, however, particularly as children grow older.

One topic I'm interested in discussing is TV programming, film and youtube, for example, as literature, art, and cultural blueprint. Since we avoid it, are we missing decades of artistic and cultural development/progress? If so, how do we incorporate it? Controlled viewing of programming? (Yuck - I don't want to be the police, though I have been described as a TV-Nazi.) On DVD? After the fact, commercial-free? Or not at all?

I don't think my kids need to see everything their friends see in order to "get" the larger culture, but television and film are important media for artists, activists, scholars, and citizens. The technological evolution of audiovisual media informs the way writers, performers, musicians, etc. create and vice versa. How important is it for a child of the twenty-first century to be exposed to what is becoming the dominant medium for many creatives? If they have something to say, should they be limited to expressing it in chalk drawings just because their parents are super-freaky? (JK)

Though new here, I agree a forum is much more effective than a tribe.

I would think TV-free would fall in with EBF, co-sleeping, non-vax, no-circ and home birth as no-brainer Mothering topics.

My .02 cents - I'd prefer not to be lumped with the TV forum. Seems like a major fire hazard.

I think that's a natural relationship!

I wanted to say thanks to Shell for posting this, I've enjoyed reading this discussion so much!
I am currently in the tender position of beginning a new family and have learned so much on MDC in the last months of pregnancy that has helped me to shape my philosophies and make clear decisions. This topic is near and dear to my heart and I would so appreciate a place to share ideas and learn from one another! Television effects us all on so many levels, however visible or invisible and I think questioning it's place in childhood is an essential discussion in a community like this one! Great Idea!

I'm not TV free.....but I aspire to be. A TV-free forum would be a great place for me to hang out and be a wannabe

Still interested!

Can we not just...

start discussing the questions and topics that are on our minds while we are waiting for the forum to be set up?

We could but I personally find the "tribe-like" format a nightmare when discussing many things!

I also wish we could have a bit more modly input.

Where, at the moment, are we meant to start threads relating to this? Childhood Years, Media, TAO? Maybe we could start some topics that we want to discuss, and then link to them here? I don't know if that's breaking any rules, but it would be an experiment in contained expansion.

I started this topic last night, so any of you are welcome to come weigh in, although it's less about TV and more about consumerism:

Come Read!

Oops, that's strange. Well here's the link itself,

http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=768867

But you can find me in Talk Amongst Yourselves, and the title is "encouraging critical consumerism or something.

Or feel free to click on my name here and find it that way.

ETA: Now that I look, it might be that you don't have access to Talk Amongst Yourselves, since I think there is a post count limit for that section. Bummer!

RE: Location of the subforum, I guess I'm a little concerned that if it's in the TV section some of the interested mamas won't find it. I never peeked in the TV forum until I needed to make a point about the need for this sub-forum. Browsing TV-free mamas might not see it if it's under "TV." Just a thought. Probably a neurotic worry but it's my 2 cents.

I haven't read all of the replies, but as a TV family aspiring to be tv-free, I would love to see a sub-forum for this. Great idea!!!!!
