Opera for Dummies (okay, "newbies")

Does anyone here like opera? I have had very little exposure to opera, but what little I've had I have really enjoyed. Orf's Carmina Burana and Wagner's MacBeth.

Can anyone suggest some operas for a newbie to that form of music? I'd like to cultivate more of an appreciation for it. (Pavarotti's passing prompted this thread.)

Thank you very much!

You at least need to cover the "ABCs" of opera:

Aida - Verdi
La Boheme - Puccini
Carmen - Bizet

My dad is an opera coach... he's been doing opera production for 15 years. I'm not the world's hugest fan, but I know a bit about it by association.

I've got a master's in opera (yup, kind of a useless degree .) I agree with Lisa C's recommendations. Here's an amazing copy of Boheme with Pavarotti and Mirella Freni: http://music.barnesandnoble.com/sear...42104921&itm=2

Another good set is Pavarotti's "Opera For Everyone." Here's a link to those: http://music.barnesandnoble.com/sear...ch=T&FRM=0&z=y It's kind of an Opera's Greatest Hits series, but you know why? Because they're great pieces sung by great artists.

I was lucky enough to hear Pavarotti sing numerous times, and even met him backstage at the Met once. He gave me a huge hug, and it was the only time I actually felt I would faint at meeting a celebrity. Thanks for starting this thread. I was so sad about his passing.

I grew up listening to Pavarotti. What an amazing voice! I was also very sad when I heard about his death.
