Can I decopage an old suicase

So I am at my local goodwill store and i find two small suitcase in okay condition. Think samsonite/american tourister hardsided luggage. No frills, just a basic suitcase.

We are going on vacation next month and I think it would be cute for my kids age 3 and 2 to have their own suitcases, only what I have seen is soft-sided with wheels, not too sturdy.

So I was wondering if I could decopage(sp?) these two small suitcases with the fabric if their choice, and maybe finish the edges with ribbon or something and hot glue.

As far as cost, one suitcase was $2.00 and the other $3.00. I already have a jar of decopage stuff. Althoug I would need more and of course the fabric. But i don't think I will need more than a yard of fabic for each suitcase, and then the ribbon/edging.

Both of my kids have loved grandma's suitcase when she has visited so I think having their own to fill with clothes and stuff they want to take will be fun for them.

Any sugglestions or other ideas would be appreciated, as I am not very crafty, but woul be realatively easy!

Thanks REgina

Well, I've not done it before, but for what you paid for the suitcases...why not try it? It could be precious!

Give it a go...I bet it works.

Oh, and post some pics, I'd love to see them when you are done.

I think you definitely could but you may have to sand the suitcases a little if they are too smooth so that the glue grabs. :

A friend of mine did this...

She didn't use fabric, but a bunch of old pictures, stuff cut out of magazines, ect. It turned out great!

Lots of luck to you, it sounds like a wonderful idea and has the potential to be precious!

I think I will go buy them!

I looked for fabric at my local walmart. WE live in a small town, and I don't want to neccessarily drive around looking for that perfect fabric...as I could get really obsessed!

But after reading about using the old photos, I am thinking maybe I could use wrapping paper, as there are always lots of styles with characters my kids would love...I hate my kids wearing and advertising in general, but I think I can get over this since we won't be using them very often.

So tomorrow I will go back to goodwill and see if they are still there. I mentioned it to my dh...........who knows I would like to be crafty, but in reality aside from scrapbooking I don't devote enough time or energy to stuff, unless it is easy and can be done relatively quickly. Anyway he said he thought that sounds neat.
Which is great b/c he has been nit picking our budget lately, even though I know we can afford to spend $10-20 on a craft like this.
(Like he flipped out when I bought a really stylish diaper bag last week at goodwill for $3.00. I is all black has a nich parent accessory pocket for all of my stuff, I use my diaper bag as purse 75% of the time. And a pocket just for my cell phone. I could totally use it for a different bag later, oh and the bottle holder holds my rummermaid water bottle. Anyway my other diaper bag had ripped which I had also purchase used, so I think he needs to back of and let my "splurge." I guess he is just trying to make sure we have lots of extra money for our vacation so we don't have to nitpick then.
: At least I am going to give him the benifit of the doubt on this one. Sorry to be rambling just my kids are both asleep and my dh is at work, so you all are my "human contact" right now!
