If you CD..... - Page 2

Nate's Mama, I would start now on your 16 month old!! You can get a feel for what you like, then you don't have to play the guessing game for the new baby.

I cloth diapered in 2003-2004 and I like Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heinies (sold colors only), Bumkins AIOs, prefolds and Proraps diaper covers, kissaluv 0s for newborns, and thats it. I know some new kinds have came out since but I haven't tried them (like BumGenius). The Motherease one-size and Sandies system is pretty good too.
I tried tons of brands (including fancy expensive WAHM hyena dipes) and these triumphed as the tried and true for me. They are still in great condition to use for baby #3!! DD still wears M and L Fuzzi Bunz to bed.

Nates Mama you can definitely start on your 16 month old now. I just started CD about two months ago, and my son is 19 months old. I use mstly fitteds and prefolds. The fitteds are really nice ( I love motherease sandys ) but I bought a lot of prefolds initially because they were much cheaper. The first time I put a prefold on my son h looked so funny and it almost made me want to stop CDing. But then I learnt the bikini twist and now it's a sinch.

This is so funny to me. It's like you're speaking a different language.
Fitteds, AIO, bikini twist, prefolds - I haven't the first clue what you're talking about

There's a seminar in my area given by a local CD retailer I'll be going there in the next month or two. I will learn the lingo!!

I so appreciate all the feedback. I don't personally know anyone that CD's!
Thx

Oh I remember I was so confused about all the different diapers too. I think I first bought a sample package to try different things.

My son is 15 months, and we've been CDing since he was 6 days old. Once the tar was out of his system we started and haven't quit. I don't use disposables for just going out, it's just as easy for a cloth to me. The only time I used disposables was on the day of a flight. Other than that, even hubby is a CD advocate. We now make them and are starting out own business. Good luck!

I will use some sposies in the early weeks and then change to cd when I feel rested enough to deal with the laundry...Although we EC and love it so whichever I use it will be a back up. With ds I ended up using only 0-3 diapers a day. Anyone else EC or thinking about it?

I've used cloth diapers from the very beginning with all of my kiddos. I use prefolds, various kinds of wraps, a snappy, and happy heinies for bedtime. Ds#2 and Ds#3 were both heavy wetters around 15-18 months old, and so I occasionally used disposables at night during that period. Ds#1 went through a similar phase, but it was earlier on, and so I could use two prefolds. There are ways to layer different materials for heavy wetting with a trimmer fit, but I've never checked them out.

I'm interested in doing a combination of ec and cloth this time around.

BTW, my husband was very skeptical about cloth back when I was pregnant with ds#1, but I was driven by environmental issues and health issues, and managed to convince him with the incredible cost savings. 'Course, when I started, it was right at the beginning of the huge boom of internet cd sales, so prefolds were the way to go, economically. When ds#1 was around 18 months old, you could get just about everything that you can get now, but I haven't switched.

I am usually given a packet or two of disposable nappies, so I will hang onto them for emergencies, but I don't plan to use them regularly.

I always end up freecycling half a packet because the baby has grown out of them.

Nate'sMama - as a note of encouragement to you, some friends of mine adopted a toddler and although he'd been in disposables all his life, they used cloth on him. Soon he was carrying a (clean) prefold around the house and petting it. He loved how soft the cloth felt!

Nope, I'd never put a disposable on one of my dds.

What about disposables makes you think they'd be superior at night?

The smell of sposies after a whole night is one of the reasons we CD! Like a flowery litter box!

We do just fine with a double-stuffed FB at night on ds2. Ds1 uses the potty.

For a newborn, we used sposies until meconium was gone. Then Fuzzibunz. this time I may get some prefolds or fitteds.

For me they may very wll end up being superior at night. If it means I dont have to deal with rinsing a poopy diaper in the middle of the night when I'm dead tired, then yeah, I consider that superior at that particular time.

No. We don't even use disposables when we travel (car trips, etc.). I didn't start CDing DD until she was almost 4 months, so I'm so excited to CD a newborn!

Well, I never even rinsed bf baby poo out of my diapers, so I never had that inconvenience. And now, if dd ever pooed in the middle of the night, I would leave it until morning to rinse!

I would do the same thing.

I may end up doing CD at night, if I find that it's not that much extra work....but I have no qualms about using sposies the first few weeks if it helps me stay sane. We'll see when the time comes.

i expect to have 3 in cloth diapers.

i feel i should share my cloth diaper journey - seems like it'll come in handy.

i did disposables iwth baby#1. til baby#2 arrived. both are in disposables, wearing the same size diaper (yeah, baby #2 was THAT big). when baby #2 was 3 months old, I started rethinking the cloth diaper thing. Figured I could start transitioning just baby #2 into cloth and keep #1 in disposables. (#1 has HORRID stools. couldn't fathom cloth diapers and dealing with that.)

fast forward a few months. i've slowly built up a stash of cloth diapers and recycled fabrics around the house to have enough diapers for one child in diapers full time.

Now i'm starting to think about hmm, maybe i could save MORE money if I put baby #1 (who's 2 years old now) in cloth during the 'wet diaper' times of the day and when i expect him to have a bowel movement, keep him in disposables.

well, that worked well fora nother few weeks, but one day, i 'guessed' wrong on when he'd poop and he did a real icky. well, that wasn't so bad to deal with as i thought.

esp since i realized my washing machine does a GREAT job getting rid of the most unpleasant things in the prewash.

so, i slowly put baby #1 in full time cloth.

then i learned to sew. now i make all their diapers and have been working on a stash for the next baby.

i prefer cloth to disposables. it's really not so bad after a while. the icky stuff is minimal, and i learned my washer does a great job, so i'm pretty lazy.

it's so easy when the baby is breast fed exclusively. i NEVER toileted those diapers. the prewash was all that needed - no matter how much volume there was.

for on the go, i made individual diaper bags that i put a clean diaper in, 2 cloth wipes and that's it. i always have a water bottle, so that's my 'solution'. i pull out clean diaper, moisten the wipes, change diaper, put dirty diaper and wipes in the individual diaper bag (lined with pul), pull the drawstring, snap the snap and i'm done!

i keep 4 at all times attached to the car seat belt in my car. 2 per kid.

that's been enough for all my outings thus far - can cover up to 8 hours if needed that way. esp if one puts extra soaker on 'first' diaper of outing and changing when convenient. (if pooped, i never delay, but pee - after 6 months of age, yeah, i've been known to finish grocery shopping or errands or whatever and change him at home.)

i also do assembly line diaper changes. if one needs it, the other gets done, too.

gotten to the point where both boys know if one poops, they both get changed asap, (poop smells travel faster than pee smells, lol) so they'll lay down on the floor near the diaper station, lol.

(they're 18 months and 3 yrs old now).

i also do open diaper pail in diaper station area, closed diaper pail in bathrooms - for holding the dumped poopy diapers. . . .

if you keep the dipaer pail open for pee 'only' or breast milk 'only' diapers, there's no odor.

weird, but true. if you close the lid, the ammonia smell will knock you out.

betty ann, thanks so much for the info. It gives me hope that I maybe able to cloth diaper from the get go after all.
