wood finish

We got a cute children's table and chairs set from IKEA and it is totally unfinished. I was wondering if we could just oil it, but DH thinks we should stain it and finish it so it would be protected from dd's food and drinks that will inevitably be spilled all over it.

Any ideas what we could use that is safe to use around little kids?

Your hubby has a good point. Perhaps some woodworking mamas can better answer your question, but I would think that varnishing it or putting some sort of wood sealer would keep stains and water/paint/juice off. Latex based paint is the most durable and scrubable. Some people just rub their furniture down with linseed oil, but I don't think it would keep typical kid stains off of it.
