I realized today I never scheduled my visit (which should have been today). Is it really necessary? What do they check?

I think it just depends on how your birth was. Do you have any issues you'd like to discuss?
Usually they discuss birth control options--give prescriptions/make appts for whatever you might need, answer any questions you have of body changes post birth, if you had stitches or tearing they might do a vag exam to check that everything healed properly, might also do a pap if you're due or close to do if you do them, check for PPD and/or get a prescription or referral for counseling if you might need it, run labs if needed like for low iron, etc. I'm sure there are other things, but I can't think of them right now!
For me, this time I ended up having a 2 and 6 weeks follow-up. I haven't been for the 6 weeks one, but will. I need labs drawn again for my low iron post the hemorrhage and I need to discuss our TTC options for Spring and see if that seems too soon depending what my labs look like, etc.

Well, I had an unassisted pregnancy and won't be having a pp visit. Basically, I feel fine, I'm healed, DH and have resumed our fun, bleeding is pretty much gone (a tiny bit every other day or so), and I don't do paps.

Me neither, I don't do paps. At our two week, my midwife just asked how I was feeling and how was the bleeding. She inquired about how the bfing was coming along. She looked the baby over, listened to her heart and lungs and that was it. I looked and felt fine and so did Luna, so it was pretty simple. I have a 6 week to go to where I have the option of a pap, but I won't get it.
I'm not really pro-healthcare and I don't ever go to the doctor, so that's what works for me and my family. It just depends on what makes you comfortable as to whether or not you feel like you need to go for a checkup.
