First an intro... I rarely visit this area. I wrote a lot in highschool, college not so much... I've started blogging as an outlet and would love to have one of those blogs that people just gotta read yk? So in your opinion what makes an awesome blog? Why do you get hooked? I know my criteria... but I have no idea how I fall in with the masses Examples or links to some excellent blogs are great too. TIA!

I like informative blogs. I don't really find personal blogs interesting unless I know the blogger.

A blog I visit daily is lifehacker.com, it's a tech blog with lots of info on gadgets and other geeky stuff. Another blog I visited for a long time (it's not being updated anymore) was Miss Snark , a very funny blog written by a literary agent.

I like strong opinions (even if I don't agree) and lots and lots of humor. Not mean-spirited, mostly self-directed humor.

And pictures!

I like ones where they are either very specific in the subject matter or theme (Waiter Rant, Bitch PhD, etc..) or write something different every day if it's a personal blog. I don't want to know that someone is going to write about their job 9 out of 10 days, or their kids. Mix it up often and keep your readers guessing what you'll come up with next.

I think it depends on the type of audience and subject matter you plan to cover. I generally read home and craft blogs... but I've also checked out some environmental blogs. What strikes me in each and keeps me coming back is when its especially creative. I especially love it when they have some kind of key feature to them... a certain style of writing or a certain way of incorporating photographs.

I'll give you some examples.

www.plasticfree.blogspot.com is one I like. And I know lots of people read it. Reason? The way she writes keeps you coming back. There's something new all the time but at the same time she sticks to a certain format. You know she's going to write about finding a new plastic free product, and you know sometimes she writes about her "major sins" in a confessional style, and you know she has certain slang words and it's familiar but new.

www.soulemama.typepad.com is another. Reason? I like the way she incorporates her photography with her writing. It's very neat! A lot of the blogs I frequent are for this reason.

But I think for different types of blogs there are different things that make them successful. If you were doing a newsy type blog or informative, I would keep it quick or incorporate something else in to keep their attention... IMO blogs entries shouldn't be super long and I find myself losing interest if they drone on and on. I also like it when they stick to a certain theme if its informative... or else I wouldn't keep coming back.

If it's just a personal type blog it would have to be frequently updated and really funny/interesting.

If it's informational, it would have to be obviously something I'm interested in, frequently updated, good pics, and I love humor and interesting writing style.

Ahhh the great pursuit of all bloggers...gaining readers

I enjoy smart, relevant content that has something substantial to say...or an ongoing personal story that is not too self absorbed. Uniqueness If its obvious that the blogger really cares about what their creating that makes a huge difference.

Good luck!
