Chest freezer management

I have noticed that the newer chest freezers are set up to have removable "walls" to help with organization. I have an older freezer, but would really benefit from this sort of system. Anyone know of something like this that can be purchased for an older freezer?

If not, if anyone has some tips I could use them.

Currently, I have a few old milk crates that I use to help, but it still seems that I always need the one thing that slipped under everything and am sitting there with the door open for half an hour while I unload everything and dive in. I do keep a running checklist posted next to the freezer and add/delete things as I take them out or put them in. So I know exactly what is in there but actually getting my hands on a particular item can be difficult. Complicating matters is that I keep 25-50 pound bags of bulk grains like rice, steel-cut oats, wheat berries, flour, etc... in there. I access those almost daily so it seems like I am always shoving things off to get to the bags. I do not really want to keep them in there but it seems that every time I keep a bag out, I get moth problems, which is the kiss of death for a whole foods kitchen. In the winter, I can take the bags out and keep them in a rubbermaid bin in the garage. I am too nervous to do this when the weather is warm. I worry about them going rancid. Maybe I do not need to worry about this, but that is another post. Any suggestions?

Things would be easier if I used more square storage containers. Most of my stuff is either stored in Mason jars or the occasional ziplock freezer bag. They do not stack well but I do not want to have to switch to square plastic containers because we are trying to go plastic-free. The ziplocks I do use are for things that are pre-frozen on sheets so I am OK with the use of those. Especially since I reuse the bags over and over. Some are 10 years old!

Do you have a small freezer with your fridge? If so I would keep a gallon size (or so) of each of your baking ingredients in there so you dont have to go through your chest freezer every day. DO you have hanging baskets for your chest? Those help alot too. Otherwise you could make card board dividers. But the biggest thing that I would change would be dividing up the bulk bags into ziplocs or 2 q jars before I stored it. That would drive me crazy having 50 lb bags in my freezer. That and it must get messy and I hate cleaning them out!

mine has a hanging basket and one small shelf. it's pretty tiny though! it definitley sucks when what I need is in the bottom!

my thing is I completley empty (or rather eat up) the contents every 4-6 months so there's nothing old.

we are a family of 3.

eta- I use stackable plastic and ziplocs still in the freezer. :

DH used those metal cube organizers and built compartments in our deep freeze. They work quite well - one for meat, one for veggies etc... It's like they are built but laying on their back - make sense? He did have to trim the plastic connecting pieces but that would depend on the size of your freezer.

HTH!
