Please print this, and post it or pass it around anywhere you can! Let's make some real changes in Ontario!

(And the rest of you, who aren't so lucky as to be Ontarioans [lol], maybe this is something you could do in YOUR state/province/territory/etc. to make a difference!)

ETA:
Please mail the completed petition by November 1, 2007 to:

Esther Goldstein, 80 Glen Shields Avenue, P.O. Box 49503, Concord, ON L4K 4P6

Petition to The Legislative Assembly of Ontario

WHEREAS: Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the World Health Organization, recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life with continued breastfeeding along with other food sources for up to two years and beyond for optimal health,
AND WHEREAS: Many Ontario health care services lack adequate resources needed to assist women to achieve success for the recommended, well established timeline:

We are asking the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to take a leadership role in ensuring the provision of adequate breastfeeding supports for women in Ontario by;
1.Creating a Provincial Breastfeeding Policy in Ontario,
2.Initiating a process whereby all Ontario Hospitals become Baby-Friendly as per the WHO/UNICEF guidelines,
3.Adequately fund health care providing organizations to properly train all health care providers working with new and expectant mothers in hospital and community settings,
4.Increase the number of both hospital and community based clinics in Ontario,
5.Fund the creation of a provincial “Centre for Excellence for Breastfeeding” which would serve as a training ground for professionals, a centre of research and a fully functioning clinic accessible to all women who require assistance.

Given the documented and well known health benefits to our population and subsequent financial benefits to our health care system, it is irresponsible for our provincial government not to support and increase breastfeeding resources in Ontario.

I'm an Ontario mom and I birth at a Baby-Friendly hospital (in Toronto), but I will gladly send this off and email it to all my friends.

Great post, and keep me posted on where to send it, etc.

Hmmm according to the Breastfeeding Canada there arreonly 3 other official BF friendly hospitals in Canada that are outside Quebec. Namely Hamilton, Thunderbay and Ottawa.

I too will post thjis on other Canadian parenting sites but I look forward to getting an address. Have you considered doing it via online petition?

Is there a group or organization behind this petition?

I'd be quite happy to advertise this on my Breastfeeding Canada News list (over 650 Cdn subscribers - see link in my signature below).

Send the petition and a copy of instructions (what to do with it), to my email address momsformilk at sasktel dot net, and I will send it out on my list.

Hmmm... I honestly thought mine was baby friendly because they have the WHO code posted as well as about a million bfing adverts, no formula bags, etc.

I'm going tomorrow for an appointment, but I'm going to ask. Thanks!

LP, I got this from Dani (from CPO) so I didn't get to make those decisions.

Janice, I will gladly send you the link. Mom2Mom Toronto is a big part of it, and Dr. Newman seems to be involved as well, but don't quote me on that!
