Help with "new" mattress

We've wanted to get a new mattress forever, since our current mattress is awful and super cramped with the two of us, plus DS, DD 1, newborn DD 2, dog and/or two cats in it! DH works for a higher-end hotel that is in the process of getting new mattresses. While we would have loved to take advantage of the chance to get a top-quality mattress at cost (hotel was buying something like 500 new mattress sets, and offered employees the discount, too), we have no extra $$ at the moment. We can, however, take one of the "old" mattresses for free. We'd be getting a very good quality 3 year-old Cal. King, albeit one that has been used by many, many people over that time period.

I figure it will have already out-gassed fairly well, and the mattress itself has been covered with a zippered pad that should have kept it relatively clean...
We are going to give it a through cleaning when we get it home (with natural cleaners, of course-- I'm thinking baking soda + borax and TTO w/ Lavender Oil), and keep it covered with a dust-mite cover, just in case there are any remaining nasties.

Is there anything else I should do to make this a usable freeby? Would you accept a hotel mattress? I'm slightly skeeved by the idea, though I wouldn't have a problem sleeping on a hotel mattress at the hotel-- which is probably just my own hang-up...

I think the only question I would have (and I have bought used mattresses in the past-- one way to avoid the new-mattress off-gassing when you have next to no money) is whether there are bedbugs in your area? I know they are kind of a problem in some cities on the east coast, though they haven't gotten over here to us yet. Other than that, really, it's a great interim solution, and California Kings are expensive! So are the sheets, though, and I never see any at the thriftstore.... Maybe get two queens to shove together? If that's offered?
